Abstract: An elevator car is mounted on a frame by means of four pendulum rods suspended from the frame and attached to the floor of the car, one rod being disposed at each corner of the car. Load-weighing transducer assemblies are mounted on two diagonally opposed suspension rods to sense the weight of the car, and thereby monitor the number of persons on the elevator. A fixed capacity transducer can be used with a variety of different size and weight cars through the use of a pivot arm mounting assembly for the transducer.

Abstract: Air deflectors are mounted on the top and bottom of the counterweight assembly in an elevator system to deflect air in the elevator hoistway to the sides of the counterweight as the latter moves up and down in the hoistway. The deflectors ensure that air turbulence is not directed toward the car as the car and counterweight pass each other in the hoistway. A quieter and smoother passenger ride is thus accomplished. In an ultra high-speed elevator system, the counterweights may be completely enclosed in an aerodynamic jacket. Cable connections and compensating rope connections to the counterweight are all made inboard thereof to ensure that the counterweight is free of turbulence-inducing protuberances.

Abstract: A compensating rope sheave tie down assembly prevents the compensating rope sheave from sudden upward movement if the elevator car suddenly jumps upward. The compensating rope sheave assembly comprises a strap, an inertia reel that permits the strap to follow slow movement of the compensating rope sheave, and a spring retaining mechanism that maintains the strap taut at all times. By restricting the upward movement of the sheave, the sheave tie down prevents further upward movement of the elevator car as well.

Abstract: In an elevator system, sensors 14, 15 are placed at points of inflection 11 on suspension rods 3, 5 in an elevator pendulum car support assembly 1 for the purpose of measuring weight. Sensors placed at such points of inflection measure the tension in the rods and lead to electrical circuitry 20 to cause an output signal proportional to the load on the cab independent of bending moments exerted upon the ends of the rods.

Abstract: Air flow in an elevator hoistway is directed to the sides of the elevator car in order to avoid creating air turbulence in the path of travel of the counterweight assembly and in the area of hoistway doors and sills. Control of the air flow is accomplished with pitched air deflectors mounted on the roof of the car. Each air deflector comprising a shear panel and a pitched panel serves to deflect air in the hoistway away from the counterweights and to one side of the car. Shear panels are mounted on the top and bottom of the car to cover the landing sills as the car moves past floors in the hoistway whereby air is sheared away from the sills and air intercepted by the car travel is kept from passing hoistway elements which induce noise and vibration of the car.

Abstract: An elevator car (10) is disposed in a frame (15) which moves on rails through an elevator hoistway. A pendulum mount is used to mount the car (10) in the frame (15) so that the car (10) is free to swing within the frame (15) in pendulum fashion. Both lateral and torsional swinging movement of the car (10) within the frame (15) are controlled. A combination spring/damper assembly interconnects the car (10) and the frame (15) to control such lateral movements of the car (10) whereby the car (10) is softly stabilized within the frame.

Abstract: In a traction drive elevator system, the ropes from the counterweight are fed over a secondary or deflection sheave to the bottom of a drive sheave, around the drive sheave for more than 180 DEG and then to the elevator car. The sheaves contain polyurethane inserts for the rope. The draw angles, vertical and horizontal, are 1.5 DEG .

Abstract: SELF-REFILLING HYDRAULIC ACTUATOR A piston slides in a fluid-filled piston chamber for damping or snubbing the movement of an object connected thereto. Attached to the piston is a piston rod which is disposed in the main fluid supply reservoir located below the piston chamber, at the lowest point in the apparatus. As the piston moves, the associated movement of this rod in the reservoir varies its displacement therein, thereby displacing fluid into a vented secondary reservoir which is located above the piston chamber, at the highest point in the damper apparatus. Any leakage from the piston chamber collects in the reservoirs. Both reservoirs are in fluid supply connection with the piston chamber so that piston movement causes fluid to flow into the chamber from the reservoirs so as to keep the chamber completely filled with fluid at all times. Both reservoirs supply fluid to the piston rod seals, which are thereby always immersed in fluid.
