    Abstract: A system and method for transparent Mobile IP registration within PPP negotiation uses a mobile telephone to relay messages between terminal equipment and a Foreign Agent (FA). An IPCP configuration request message by the terminal equipment requesting the assignment of an IP address is modified by the mobile telephone to delete the IP address request option. Other configuration options are forwarded unchanged by the mobile telephone to the peer/network. The peer/network responds with an acknowledgement of the requested configuration options and flow control between the terminal and the MT is asserted to permit Mobile IP registration. In the course of Mobile IP registration, and IP address is assigned to the mobile unit by the FA. Upon completion of the Mobile IP registration, flow control between the mobile telephone and the terminal is deasserted and the IP address assigned during Mobile IP registration is provided to the terminal equipment. In addition, the previously requested options may also be acknowledged.

    Abstract: A method or system establishes a packet network call over a transmission link extending between a mobile terminal device and an interworking function which comprises a gateway or bridge connection to a network, such as a packet network. The transmission link connects the mobile terminal device to a wireless communication device over a first interface and further connects the wireless communication device to the interworking function over a second interface via a wireless link to a base station. The packet network call, once established, comprises a first interface data link formed within a predetermined data link layer across the first interface and a second interface data link formed within the predetermined data link layer across the second interface. A flow control is asserted and deasserted on the mobile terminal device. During the flow control, the wireless communication device performs a link control protocol negotiation with the interworking function to establish the second interface data link with the interworking function. After the second interface data link is established, and during the flow control, the wireless communication device performs a network control protocol negotiation with the interworking function to establish a second interface network link carried by the second interface data link. This results in an IP address being assigned to identify the mobile terminal device. After the second interface data link is established, the mobile terminal device performs a link control protocol negotiation with the wireless communication device to establish the first interface data link with the wireless communication device. After the first interface data link and the second interface network link are each established, the mobile terminal device performs a network control protocol negotiation with the wireless communication device to establish a first interface network link carried by the first interface data link, using an IP address obtained from a network control protocol negotiation with the interworking function.

    Abstract: This disclosure is directed to techniques for supporting transition between network communication protocols in a communication network. The techniques may be applicable to different network communication protocols, but are especially useful in the transition from the IPv4 communication protocol to the IPv6 communication protocol in a wireless communication network. In general, to reduce consumption of scarce IPv4 address during the transition period, a network communication device implementing a dual IPv4/IPv6 stack acquires an IPv4 address only when necessary to communicate with IPv4 resources on the network. The network communication device uses an IPv6 address at the start of a communication session, and does not acquire an IPv4 address unless a need arises later in the session for communication with an IPv4 resource. The IPv4 address may be acquired for a limited period of time, such as fixed period of time or a period of actual usage, to further promote availability of IPv4 addresses.

    Abstract: A wireless communication device (100) includes a manual input device (120, 122), a key lock memory (108), and a key lock processor (104). The processor (104) accesses user-programmable parameters stored in the memory (108) that define conditions for automatically disabling and also enabling commands to be issued from the manual input device (120, 122). When the processor (104) determines that the disabling condition has been met, the manual input device (120, 122) is automatically disabled, and will remain disabled until the enabling condition is met.     Abstract: A method and a wireless communication device (MT2) for simultaneously negotiating LCP or IPCP configuration options over both the Rm and the Um interfaces. When the MT2 device receives either an LCP or an IPCP Configure-Request packet over one of the Rm or the Um interfaces, the MT2 device parses the requested configuration options and determines whether the requested options are supported by the MT2 device. If the requested options are supported, the MT2 device saves a Configure-Request ID, included in the Configure-Request packet, and frames the Configure-Request packet in a PPP frame for transmission on the other of the Rm or the Um interfaces. If any of the requested configuration options are not supported by the MT2 device, the MT2 device creates a Configure-Reject packet, including the unsupported options, and frames the Configure-Reject packet in a PPP frame for transmission over the interface through which it received the Configure-Request packet.

    Abstract: A method and a wireless communication device capable of flow controlling data to be sent from a TE2 device over a Rm interface when PPP renegotiation occurs over a Um interface. Flow control is asserted by the MT2 device by means of manipulating electrical signaling of a physical interface between the MT2 device and the TE2 device. A second embodiment provides a method and a wireless communication device for buffering data on the MT2 device when the PPP renegotiation of the Um interface occurs. In a third embodiment, data is buffered when the PPP renegotiation of the Um interface occurs. When an amount of free buffer space is less that a predetermined threshold, flow control is asserted to the TE2 device.
