Abstract: The transmitted power of a mobile telephone is established by power control bits that are transmitted in a traffic channel from a base station and that are demodulated by a rake receiver in the telephone. The rake receiver includes a plurality of demodulators that demodulate respective fingers of the traffic channel which may be caused by multipath conditions, with the power control bits from each demodulator being combined with the power control bits of the other demodulators in the rake receiver regardless of whether the demodulators are in lock with their respective fingers. The combined power control signal from a rake receiver associated with a first base station is then tested against a threshold. If the combined power is at least equal to the threshold, the combined power control signal is sent to a logic combiner. If other base stations are communicating with the mobile telephone, the combined power control signal from each of these other base stations is also sent to the logic combiner. If any power control signal commands the mobile telephone to decrease its transmitted power, it does so; otherwise, it increases its transmitted power. Alternatively, the power control bits from each demodulator in a rake receiver can be blocked if the finger energy falls below a threshold that depends on the number of fingers from the associated base station.

Abstract: In a communications network, a network user communicates using a remote unit with another user via at least one base station. The communications network has a first base station having a first coverage area and a second base station having a second coverage area. In the situation where communication is not established between the second base station and the remote unit, in order to provide communication between the remote unit and the first base station when the remote unit is in the first coverage and simultaneously in the second coverage area, the first base station produces a first active communication signal at intended for the remote unit. The first base station transmits the first active communication signal from a first antenna. The base station delays the first active communication signal to produce a first delayed active communication signal and transmits it from a second antenna wherein the second antenna is oriented with respect to the first antenna such that the first active communication signal and the first delayed active communication signal fade independently as perceived by the remote unit. The first base station may measures a round trip delay of the first active communication signal in order to identify that the remote unit is located within the second coverage area.

Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for generating a constant data rate channel supporting signaling data transmission in an adjustable rate wireless communication system is described. In accordance with one aspect of the invention the rate at which the channel operates may be adjusted based on the particular use and environmental conditions such that the appropriate data rate up to a maximum capability can be achieved. User data is then placed into frames based on the selected rate. When available, signaling data is added into each frames in a predetermined amount. The resulting frame is encoded, repeated and punctured based on the selected rate and whether signaling data has been introduced, and transmitted via RF signals to the receive system. Upon reception, the frame is processed in accordance with having only user data and with having signaling data. That is, the frame is processed both as if it had signaling data and as if no signaling data were present. Once the frame is processed, the particular processing that is more likely to be correct is determined via error checking. If the signaling data processed frame is more likely to have be correct, the signaling data is separated from the user data and each processed accordingly. If the non-signaling data processing is determined to be more likely to be correct, the frame is processed as if it were entirely comprised of user data.

Abstract: The invention relates to a communication system in which transmission takes place according to a format which permits different types of data to be combined and transmitted within a single transmission. The novel feature is that the communication system transmits variable length frames of data in packets, and that a data combining and transmission sub-system (14, 16, 18, 20) is provided so that when a frame of data does not require a complete packet for transmission, the data combining sub-system combines the frame of data with additional data to provide a complete packet. The data combining sub-system comprises input means for receiving the frame of data and the additional data and for combining the frame of data and the additional data to provide a complete packet responsive to a control signal, and control means for providing the control signal.
