Abstract: A radio-frequency (RF) repeater, including a first repeating section which is adapted to receive and amplify forward-signals from a first transceiver so as to generate amplified-forward-signals and to radiate the amplified-forward-signals to a second transceiver. The first section also receives and amplifies reverse-main-signals from the second transceiver so as to generate amplified-reverse-main-signals and transmits the amplified-reverse-main-signals to the first transceiver. The repeater includes a second repeating section which is adapted to receive and amplify reverse-diversity-signals from the second transceiver so as to generate amplified-reverse-diversity-signals and transmits the amplified-reverse-diversity-signals to the first transceiver.

Abstract: Techniques to determine the position of a terminal under the coverage of a repeater in a wireless communication system. In an aspect, an identification code is transmitted for each repeater and used by the terminal (or a PDE) to unambiguously identify the repeater. The identification codes for the repeaters in the system can be implemented with PN sequences at defined offsets that are specifically reserved for repeater identification. In anoth er aspect, the identification code for each repeater is transmitted using a spread-spectrum signal designed to have minimal impact on the performance of the system and to be recoverable by the terminal in similar manner as for a forward modulated signal. In this way, no additional hardware is required fo r the terminal to recover the identifier signal. In one specific design, the spread spectrum identifier signal is generated in accordance with and confor ms to the IS-95 CDMA standard.

Abstract: A method for communicating between a mobile transceiver in a multistory building and a wireless communication network external to the building, the building including alternating even and odd floors and having a near side an d a far side, the method including dividing a plurality of slave transceivers into a main sub-group of slave transceivers and a diversity sub-group of sla ve transceivers, the transceivers being operative to transmit signals of a type which are conveyed over the wireless communication network. The method further includes conveying a signal between the wireless communication netwo rk and the mobile transceiver via one or more of the plurality of slave transceivers positioned in the building.

Abstract: A duplex radio transceiver (50), coupled to baseband circuitry (46,48) and to an antenna (32), includes a receive chain (48), a transmit chain (46) and a duplexer (49). The transmit chain (46) includes filter components (52,56) that attenuate signals originating from the transmit chain in a receive frequency band by a stop-band attenuation that is approximately equal to or greater than the stop-band attenuation of the duplexer in the receive band. Similarly, the receive chain (48) includes filter components (68,72) that attenuate signals in a transmit frequency band by a stop-band attenuation that is approximately equal to or greater than the stop-band attenuation of the duplexer in the transmit band. A bias control circuit (74) senses a power level associated with radio signals in the transmit chain and adjusts an amplifier (66) in the receive chain responsive to the power level.

Abstract: A method for estimating a size of reverse link resources provided by a base-station transceiver system (BTS), including performing respective first, second, and third measurements of first, second, and third signal strengths received at the BTS. The method also includes comparing the first measurement with the second measurement so as to determine an initial minimum signal strength, and adding at a predetermined time an aging value to the initial minimum signal strength so as to form an updated minimum signal strength. The method further includes forming a comparison between the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement, determining from the comparison a minimum of the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement to be a minimum received signal strength, and determining the size of the reverse link resources provided by the BTS in response to the minimum received signal strength.
