    Abstract: -17- RCA 73,189 A deflection yoke of the self-converging type uses pincushion-shaped horizontal deflection fields and barrelshaped vertical deflection fields for converging three in-line electron beams and includes a first pair of magnets disposed near the top and bottom of the beam exit end of the yoke. Each magnet of the first pair is poled to produce a field having the same polarity as the vertical deflection field during the interval in which the electron beam is deflected towards the magnet. A second pair of magnets is disposed at the top and bottom of the inside of the flared inner surface of the yoke at a generally central position between the beam entrance and beam exit ends of the yoke, each of which is poled for producing a field of a polarity opposite to that of the vertical deflection field when deflecting the beam towards the respective magnet. The first and second magnet pairs coact to correct North-South pincushion distortion without substantial effect on the convergence. A third pair of magnets is disposed at the top and bottom of the inside flare of the yoke between the beam entrance end of the yoke and the second pair of magnets and is poled in the same direction as the first magnet pair. The third magnet pair reduces the sensitivity of the convergence to the position of the deflection yoke relative to the electron beams.

    Abstract: 1385745 Colour television tubes RCA CORPORATION 1 May 1972 [14 Jan 1972] 20047/72 Heading H1D A colour television tube of the shadow mask type using three co-planar beams, is provided with a deflection yoke adapted to produce a pin cushion shaped horizontal deflecting field which causes under convergence at extreme horizontal deflection, and a barrel-shaped vertical deflecting field which causes over-convergence at extreme vertical deflection; and the electron gun is adapted to produce a spacing between the beams at the centre of the deflection yoke not greater than 0À2 inch. Dynamic convergence arrangements are then unnecessary but may be provided for larger tubes. The electron gun may comprise three individual cathodes and common G1 to G4 electrodes provided with apertures for the beams; the outer apertures of the final electrode may be surrounded by magnetically permeable material such as nickel iron to partly screen the outer beams from the deflection fields and thereby equalize the raster sizes for the three colours. The deflection yoke is as described in Specification 1385747 and is preferaby toroidal but saddle coils may be used. The shadow mask may be provided with elongate apertures, and the fluorescent screen may comprise stripes of different colours.

    Abstract: 1478059 Electron guns R C A CORPORATION 17 July 1974 [8 Aug 1973] 31586/74 Heading H1D An in line electron gun for a C.R.T. (e.g. at least two, preferably three, guns, and shadow mask type) comprises edge to edge pole piece plates 20-23 of a convergence assembly for enhancing a magnetic field deflecting beams out of the plane of the guns and plates 14-19 for enhancing deflection in the plane of the guns. The plates 14-23 may be connected to non- magnetic circular disc 30 held by clips 34 to slightly larger disc 32. Non-magnetic tubular extensions 44, 46 protrude from electrodes 36 of the outer beams 24, 28 to provide alignment for disc 30 and plates 14-23. Individual electrodes of the guns, as in Fig. 2 (not shown) are mounted along six insulator e.g. glass support rods (58), by straps (62, 64) and tab (60). Spring spacers (66) locate the gun in the neck, and straps (70) support the heater filaments. An external driver convergence assembly (Fig. 3, not shown) comprises two ferrite cores (74, 76) with coil assemblies (82, 84, 86 and 88, 90, 92) and air coils (78, 80), the latter providing horizontal convergence deflection of central beam (26) and compensating for interaction of adjacent fields. Vertical deflection of beam 26 may be by connection of the two pairs of outer coils on the E cores, and may allow for gun misalignment correction.

    Abstract: A deflection yoke for a television picture tube utilizing coplanar horizontal in-line electron guns includes vertical and horizontal coil windings selected for producing positive vertical isotropic astigmatism and negative horizontal isotropic astigmatism which underconverges the electron beams along the vertical deflection axis such that the beams are substantially converged at all points on a scanned raster of the picture tube. The desired convergence characteristics are achieved by winding the vertical and horizontal coil conductors such that the conductor distribution in each quadrant of a cross-section of the yoke is least in a region between 25 DEG and 45 DEG measured from the vertical deflection axis of the yoke.

    Abstract: A self-converging deflection yoke having toroidally-wound vertical deflection coils incorporates a pair of magnetically permeable field formers mounted on either side of the yoke. The field formers shunt a portion of the external field flux to the vicinity of the electron gun assembly where they form a pincushion-shaped field which aids in vertical coma correction. In one embodiment, a yoke comprising planar-wound vertical coils incorporates both coma-correcting rear field formers and a pair of front crossarm assemblies for providing side-pincushion correction. The resultant yoke provides covergence of electron beams free of coma and side-pincushion distortion with reduced sensitivity to transverse motion. In another embodiment, similar results are obtained without the front crossarms by vertical deflection coil having a nonradial winding configuration.
