Abstract: The asymmetric beam focusing slot provides a two-part crossover of the electron beams. The slot has a length greater than the spacing between the outer apertures and a width greater than the diameter of the apertures. The screen grid also has an improved refraction lens which comprises a transversely disposed recessed portion including a substantially rectangularly-shaped central portion and substantially triangularly-shaped end parts. The refraction lens provides a compensating field between the screen grid and the main electron lens to offset any changes in the main electron lens caused by variations in the focus voltage in the main electron lens. The recessed portion has a length, extending in the plane of the electron beams, at least coextensive with the length of the slot, and a width, extending substantially orthogonal to the plane of the electron beams, substantially greater than the width of the slot. The recessed portion is surrounded by a peripheral rim which conforms to the shape of the recessed portion. The central part of the peripheral rim is remote from the center aperture, and the triangularly-shaped end parts of the rim are in proximity to the outer apertures, thereby affecting the electrostatic field in the vicinity of the outer apertures by tilting the field lines within the recessed portion.

Abstract: An improved color picture tube has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams, a center beam and two side beams, along coplanar paths toward a screen of the tube. The gun includes a main focus lens for focusing the electron beams. The main focus lens is formed by two spaced electrode members each having three separate inline apertures therein. Each electrode also includes a peripheral rim. The peripheral rims of the two electrodes face each other. The apertured portion of each electrode is within a recess set back from the rim. The width of the recess in at least one of the electrodes is wider at the center beam path than at the side beam paths, measured perpendicular to the plane containing the electron beam paths.

Abstract: An inline electron gun (26:26 min ) for a cathode-ray tube (8) includes an improved beam forming region comprising three cathodes (34), a control grid (36) and a novel screen grid electrode means (38,38 min ), the latter comprising two spaced apart metal members (G2a, G2b;G2a min ,G2b min ). In one embodiment (26), the first member (G2a) closest to the control grid is relatively thick and has three slots (52) formed in one surface thereof facing away from the control grid. Circular apertures (54) are formed within the slots and extend through the body of the first member. The second member (G2b) has three circular apertures (56) therethrough aligned with the circular apertures in the first member. When a dynamic signal is superimposed on the DC bias voltage and applied to the second member, the first member shields the control grid from the dynamic signal so that little or no brightness modulation occurs. In a second embodiment (26 min ), the first (G2a min ) and second (G2b min ) members of the screen grid (38 min ) are structurally interchanged. In a third embodiment, the first (G2a) and the second (G2b) members have orthogonally disposed rectangular slots formed in facing surfaces.

Abstract: An improved color picture tube has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams, a center beam and two side beams, along coplanar paths toward a screen of the tube. The gun includes a main focus lens for focusing the electron beams. The main focus lens is formed by two spaced electrode members, each having three separate inline apertures therein, a center aperture and two side apertures. The improvement comprises each of the apertures in each of the focus lens electrodes having a shape that distorts a portion of the focus lens thereat, to at least partially compensate for an astigmatic effect within the tube that acts on an associated electron beam. The side apertures in both of the electrodes are nonsymmetrical about axes that pass through the respective side apertures and are perpendicular to the initial coplanar paths of the electron beams.

Abstract: A color CRT has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams toward a screen, the gun including a main focus lens formed by two spaced electrodes (40, 42) each having three separate inline apertures (58,60,62;64,66,68) and a peripheral rim (70,72), the apertured portion of each electrode being within a recess (54,56) set back from the rim, 15 wherein the main focus lens electrode (42) closest to the screen includes a slot (95) e.g. formed by two strips (96,98), on the side facing the screen, the slot extending in the direction of the three electron beam paths and includes means for providing a weaker stigmator effect on the two side beams than on the center beam. As shown in Figure 5 the ends of the strips (96, 98) may be tapered, or curved or the strips shortened, to provide the weaker stigmator effect. Alternatively, Figures 9 and 10 (not shown), the slot is dogboned in shape and located in a bracket (102) attached to an apertured plate (52), in turn attached to the screen side of the main focus lens electrode closest to the screen.

Abstract: RCA 72,353 HIGH POTENTIAL, LOW MAGNIFICATION ELECTRON GUN The electron gun, which is especially adapted for use in color picture tubes, comprises in the order named: a cathode, an apertured-plate control grid, an aperturedplate screen grid, and at least two tubular focusing electrodes. The quality of the gun's beam spot is improved by: 1. Establishing an operating electric field between the screen grid and first focusing electrode which is between about 100 and 400 volts/mil (3937-15748 volts/mm), thereby reducing aberration effects in the beam-forming region of the gun; 2. Making the screen grid thick so as to prevent the high first focusing electrode voltage from penetrating the region between the control grid and screen grid, thereby allowing the control grid-screen grid field to provide a divergent effect on the electron beam prior to beam crossover and thus give a reduced crossover angle; 3. Elongating the first focusing electrode to provide an optimum filling of the main focus lens with the beam to maximize the object distance of the focusing system; and 4. Structuring the screen grid and first focusing grid to provide a flat electrostatic field therebetween to avoid prefocusing action in that region, so as not to cause an effective reduction of the object distance of the focusing system.
