Abstract: An improved color picture tube has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams, a center beam and two side beams, along coplanar paths toward a screen of the tube. The gun includes a main focus lens for focusing the electron beams. The main focus lens is formed by two spaced electrodes each having three separate inline apertures therein. Each electrode also includes a peripheral rim. The peripheral rims of the two electrodes face each other. The apertured portion of each electrode is within a recess set back from the rim. The main focus lens electrode closest to the screen includes a slot on the side facing the screen. The slot extends in the direction of the three electron beam paths. The slot is wider, in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the three electron beam paths, at the side beam paths than at the center beam path.

Abstract: The assembly (Fig. 3) has a trio of inline cathodes (21), a first grid (G1, 23) positioned adjacent the cathodes and a second grid (G2, 25) positioned between the first grid and a first focussing electrode (G3, 27). Each grid and electrode has a trio of inline apertures aligned with the cathodes. A common, assymmetric focussing lens is, in use, established between the first focussing electrode (G3) and a second focussing electrode (G4, 29). The lens has a maximum transverse dimension in a first direction parallel to the plane of the inline apertures greater than its maximum transverse dimension in a second orthogonal direction. In order that the cross-section of each electron beam has a greater dimension in the first direction than in the second direction at the beam- entrance of the lens, there is a slotted structure (Fig. 7, 68) associated with said first (23) grid interposing a rectangular slot (68) between each aperture (64) of the first grid and the aligned aperture of the second grid. The long dimension of the rectangle is in the second direction in the first grid (23).

Abstract: A color CRT has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams toward a screen, the gun including a main focus lens formed by two spaced electrodes (40, 42) each having three separate inline apertures (58,60,62;64,66,68) and a peripheral rim (70,72), the apertured portion of each electrode being within a recess (54,56) set back from the rim, 15 wherein the main focus lens electrode (42) closest to the screen includes a slot (95) e.g. formed by two strips (96,98), on the side facing the screen, the slot extending in the direction of the three electron beam paths and includes means for providing a weaker stigmator effect on the two side beams than on the center beam. As shown in Figure 5 the ends of the strips (96, 98) may be tapered, or curved or the strips shortened, to provide the weaker stigmator effect. Alternatively, Figures 9 and 10 (not shown), the slot is dogboned in shape and located in a bracket (102) attached to an apertured plate (52), in turn attached to the screen side of the main focus lens electrode closest to the screen.

Abstract: RCA 72,714 COLOR PICTURE TUBE HAVING AN IMPROVED ELECTRON GUN An inline electron gun includes means for weakening the effect of a portion of the horizontal magnetic deflection field on the center electron beam and for strengthening the effect of a portion of the vertical magnetic deflection field on the center electron beam. The means includes magnetic shield members completely surrounding the paths of the outer beams. Each of the members has a portion crossing the plane of the co-planar electron beam paths that is closer to the center beam path than to the outer beam paths. In a preferred embodiment, large shunts surrounding the outer beams are offset eccentrically toward the center beam relative to the outer beams.

Abstract: A 3-beam in-line electron gun comprises a pair of tub-shaped lens electrodes, each of which has three in-line apertures in its floor with tubular lips extending from the periphery of the apertures into the tubs. The lips of the lower voltage electrode are longer than the corresponding lips of the higher voltage electrode by an amount designed to either balance out the astigmatism of the fringe focus fields within the tubs or perferably to completely reverse the polarity of the overall astigmatism to at least partially compensate for the astigmatism of a self-converging yoke used with the gun.

Abstract: RCA 72,430 ELECTRON GUN EXHIBITING REDUCED FLARE A bipotential type of electron gun comprising,in the order named, a cathode aligned with a plurality of apertured electrodes including a control grid, a screen grid, a first accelerating and focusing electrode, and a second accelerating and focusing electrode. The first accelerating and focusing electrode comprises a hollow member with aligned apertures at opposite ends thereof. The hollow member comprises a first axial portion of magnetic material adjacent to the screen grid and a second axial portion of nonmagnetic material adjacent to the second accelerating and focusing electrode. The electron gun is especially adapted for use in a cathode ray tube operated with a magnetic deflection yoke which includes a pair of toroidal type vertical deflection coils which generate a magnetic fringe field within the region of the first accelerating and focusing electrode.

Abstract: A color picture tube has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams, comprising a center beam and two outer beams, along coplanar paths toward a screen of said tube. The three beams pass through a deflection zone adapted to have vertical and horizontal magnetic deflection fields established therein. The improvement comprises the inclusion of first means for weakening the effect of a portion of the horizontal magnetic deflection field on the center electron beam. Such means include elongated magnetic members located between the outer beams and the center beam with the direction of elongation being perpendicular to the plane of the electron beam paths. Also included are second means for weakening the effect of portions of both deflection fields on the two outer beams. The second means includes magnetic shield members completely surrounding each of the outer beam paths.
