Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for improving the corrosion resistance of welded workpieces. It exploits the effect of an increase in the nitrogen content improving the corrosion properties. Since, however, materials having high nitrogen contents are difficult to weld, it is proposed to increase the nitrogen content only during or after welding, in a subsequent heat treatment. This can be achieved by providing a surrounding atmosphere having a defined partial pressure of nitrogen. In the region of the weld seams and/or surfaces of the workpiece, nitrogen contents of 0.2 to 0.4% can be reached in this way, which enhances the corrosion resistance to the same extent as a considerably higher content of chromium or molybdenum. Longitudinally seam-welded pipes of stainless steel represent a particular field of application.

Abstract: The heat insulation layer (7) is used in one component, e.g. a valve housing (34) of a steam turbine, which is next to a second component, e.g. a housing cover (37), to adjust, esp. even out, differing deformation behavior of the components, esp. between room and operational temperatures, to reduce radial and/or axial tolerances. The first component is subject to e heat differential of at least 200[deg]C. The heat insulation layer is used for a steam inlet section of a turbine, which is next to a blade section, a turbine housing, a valve housing unit (31), a turbine blade, or for a component consisting of a main material, e.g. iron/nickel/cobalt alloy. The heat insulation layer consists at least partially, pref. completely, of zirconium oxide (Zr02), or titanium oxide (Ti02). An intermediate protection layer below the heat insulation is a MCrAlX layer, with M being an element from the group nickel, cobalt, and esp. iron, and X being yttrium and/or silicon and/or at least one of the rare earth.

Abstract: A protective coating for protecting a component from corrosion and oxidation at a high temperature and from excessive thermal stress, has a heat insulation layer including a ceramic material and an adhesion-promoting layer including a rhenium containing metal alloy. The metal alloy belongs to the alloys covered by the general term MCrAlY, where M represents cobalt and/or nickel and Y represents yttrium and/or at least one equivalent metal from the group including scandium and the rare earth elements. The protective coating is distinguished by high oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance of the alloy, by outstanding thermal fatigue properties and an effective and permanent bond between the alloy and the ceramic heat insulation layer. As a result of the heat insulation, the temperature at the outer surface of the protective coating can be considerably higher than with purely metallic protective coatings, without an increased thermal load being exerted on the component. The protective coating is therefore particularly suitable for a gas turbine component exposed to a hot combustion gas, for example a guide vane, a rotor blade or a heat shield.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a corrosion-resistant or oxidation-resistant coating for metallic components, in particular gas turbine components of superalloys based on nickel or cobalt. By adding rhenium, the life of protective coatings, in particular of the MCrAlY type, under corrosive or oxidising conditions can be increased. The protective coating according to the invention contains, in addition to certain selected components and impurities, the following components (in percent by weight): 1 - 20%, prefeably 4 - 10%, of rhenium, 22 - 50% of chromium, 0 - 15% of aluminium, the amount of chromium and aluminium together being at least 25% and not more than 53%, 0.3 - 2% of yttrium and 0 - 3% of silicon, the remainder mainly being at least one of the elements selected from iron, nickel and cobalt, preferably one of the elements selected from nickel and cobalt. Protective coatings qualified for certain applications can be considerably improved with regard to the life under corrosive conditions by adding even smaller amounts of rhenium.
