Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a laser beam shorter in wavelength and an optical system higher in aperture and to enable stable and sure focus control by executing focus control by a focus error signal obtd. by synthesizing first and second focus signals varying in a signal level change with respect to a change in a defocus quantity. SOLUTION: The focus error signal TFE is formed by the second focus error signal FE2 of high sensitivity in a small range of the defocus quantity and the signal TFE is formed by correcting the signal level of the first signal FE1 in a wide focus controllable range on the outer region of the focus controllable range of the second signal FE2 at the time of synthesizing the focus error signal TFE in a synthesizing circuit 56. The signal TFE of the high sensitivity and the wide focus controllable range is thus formed by the second signal FE2 of the high sensitivity and the first signal FE1 of the wide focus controllable range in the synthesizing circuit 56. Then, the focus control is executed with the signal TFE.

SOLUTION: In the optical disk for inspection, a cutting layer or a recording layer 4 by a change of optical characteristics in which data for inspection are written is formed directly on a disk substrate 1 which has the shape corresponding to a disk substrate in a usual optical disk and whose inside diameter, outside diameter, thickness and the like are selected. The optical disk for inspection having data suitable for targeted inspection is easily manufactured by avoiding manufacture of an original plate for forming optical disks and manufacture of a stamper. SOLUTION: A phase difference varying element 1 varies the phase difference with the electric signal. A phase difference detecting means 2 comprises a phase difference detecting optical system 21 and a phase difference detecting circuit system 22 and detects the phase difference. A phase difference control means 3 comprises an error signal detection part 31 and a drive circuit system 32, and performs the feedback control over the electric signal so that the detected phase difference matches the target phase difference. Namely, the phase difference detecting circuit system 22 generates a signal Sout representing the phase difference from the signal detected by the phase difference detecting optical system 21. The error signal detection part 31 generates an error signal Er of the signal Sout based upon the target value. The drive circuit system 32 controls the voltage applied to a liquid crystal panel 1-1 so that the error signal Er becomes 0.
