Abstract: An optical pickup includes a light source (21) for radiating a light beam, a diffraction element (22) for separating a light beam radiated from the light source into at least three beams, namely a main beam and two side beams, an objective lens (25) for converging the light beams separated by the diffraction element onto a signal recording surface of an optical recording medium (11), a light receiving unit (24) having a four-segment first light receiving portion (71) for receiving the main beam reflected by the recording surface of the optical recording medium and second and third light receiving portions (72, 73) arranged on respective sides of the first light receiving portion (71) for receiving the side beams reflected by the recording surface of the optical recording medium, and a calculation unit (26) for generating one tracking signal based on respective outputs of the first light receiving portion and for generating another tracking signal based on outputs of the second and third light receiving portions. In preferred emodiments of the apparatus, a disc discrimination unit sends a detection output of the optical disc both to the changeover switch selecting the desired tracking error signal and to an aperture ratio variable control unit.

Abstract: An optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus in which a main light beam and at least two auxiliary light beams are caused to impinge upon a disc (D) for recording information thereon or reproducing information therefrom in such a manner that light beam spots formed on the disc (D) by two auxiliary light beams are respectively distant substantially the same distance from a light beam spot formed on the disc (D) by the main light beam with a space therebetween in a radial direction of the disc (D) corresponding to N/2 times a track pitch on the disc (D), and then guided from the disc (D) to a photosensor (14) comprising a first photodetecting element (60) divided into two parts for detecting the main light beam and a second photodetecting element (62) divided into two parts for detecting both of two auxiliary light beams, and a tracking error signal is produced based on a difference between detection outputs derived respectively from two parts of the first photodetecting element (60) and a difference between detection outputs derived respectively from two parts of the second photodetecting element (62), one of which is subjected to level adjustment (52) for compensating a difference in intensity between the main light beam and each of the two auxiliary light beams.

Abstract: An apparatus for counting a number of record tracks which an optical head (2) traverses on a basis of a periodical track transverse information INFTR representing the traverse of the head across the record tracks. The periodical track transverse information INFTR is derived by sampling a track information of the record tracks preformed discretely on record tracks TR. In the track counting apparatus (6), a tracking signal generating circuit is installed for generating tracking signals VOP and VOQ which vary their frequencies and phases so as to follow those of the track transverse information INFTR. The number of record tracks which the optical head (2) has traversed are counted on the basis of the tracking signals VOP and VOQ. The tracking signals VOP and VOQ have continous waveforms so that the number of the tracks can accurately be counted even if only a discrete information is derived as the track transverse information INFTR.

Abstract: An apparatus for recording and reproducing data into/from an optical disc is provided. This apparatus comprises: an optical disc having an optical recording medium into and from which data can be written and erased; a laser diode (1) to write, erase, and read out data into and from the optical disc; and a power setting circuit (4A-C,5A-C,6A-C,7A-C,8A-C) for sampling and holding a detection output from a photo diode (2) to detect a light emission power of the laser diode (1), for comparing the value sampled and held with a target value, and for setting the power of the laser diode (1). The light emission power of the laser diode (1) in each of the data writing, erasing, and reading modes is controlled by the power setting means. A part of a recording area of the optical disc is provided with an extracting area (SA) to sample and hold the detection output from the photo diode (2).

Thus, it is possible to remove a DC fluctuation of a tracking error signal caused by the lateral movement of the objective lens (4) and a radial skew of the optical record medium (5).

Abstract: A focussing error detecting apparatus includes a composite lens (30) formed of a single lens (30 alpha ) made of glass and a single lens (39 beta ) made of plastics material, and a photo-detector (8). The glass lens (30 alpha ) has a uniform focal length, the plastics lens (30 beta ) is formed of a pair of lens regions (30 min a, 30 min b) divided by a flat interface (T) including an optical axis (O) of light incident on the composite lens (30), and the lens regions (30 min a, 30 min b) have different back focal lengths (f min 1, f min 2) and spaced optical axes (O1, O2). The photo-detector (8) has its photo-detecting face positioned at a middle point between converged points of light rays from the pair of lens regions (30 min a, 30 min b) on the optical axis (0) of the incident light when the light incident on the composite lens (30) is focussed. The photo-detector (8) has first and second sensors (8A, 8B) for a receiving light from the far and near-side portion of the first lens region (30 min a) relative to the interface (T), and third and fourth sensors (8C, 8D) for receiving light from the far and near-side portions of the second lens region (30 min b) relative to the interface (T).
