Abstract: Catalysts containing the oxides of vanadium, phosphorus and uranium have been found to be especially effective in the oxidation of n-butane, n-butenes and butadiene with molecular oxygen in the vapor phase to yield maleic anhydride. The reaction with n-butane gives an especially pure product in high yield.

Abstract: Maleic anhydride is prepared by reacting n-butene with molecular oxygen at a temperature of about 200 DEG to about 600 DEG C in a fluid-bed reactor using a catalyst charge containing two different catalysts--the first catalyst being one that is especially effective for preparing butadiene from the n-butylenes; and the second catalyst being one that is especially effective for preparing maleic anhydride from butadiene. Unexpectedly, substantial yields of maleic anhydride are obtained.

Abstract: Coated catalysts having an inert support material with an outer surface and a coating of active catalyst containing tungsten, vanadium and molybdenum plus optionally one or more of Fe, Mn, Cu, Sn, Sb, Cr, Ce, U, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg or mixture thereof have been found to be especially effective catalysts for the production of unsaturated acids from the corresponding unsaturated aldehydes, for example, acrolein is oxidized to acrylic acid using these catalysts. The catalysts give a very low exotherm, very high single pass yields of the desired acid and reduce the undesirable by-products.

Abstract: Improved oxidation catalysts containing mixed oxides of vanadium and phosphorus which catalysts are particularly effective in the oxidation of n-butane, n-butenes, 1,3-butadiene or a mixture thereof with molecular oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the vapour phase to produce excellent yields of maleic anhydride with very good selectivity, are prepared by a process in which at least one vanadium compound, a substantial portion of which is in the pentavalent state, and at least one phosphorus-containing compound is added to an organic liquid medium capable of reducing at least a portion of the vanadium to a +4 valence state, to form a reaction mixture. Partial reduction of the vanadium is effected in the presence of the phosphorus-containing compound and a highly ordered and uniform mixed vanadium phosphorus oxide-containing catalyst precursor is formed. An oxidation catalyst comprising the mixed oxides of vanadium and phosphorus characterized by an average valence state of vanadium from +3.9 to +4.6, and a phosphorus to vanadium ratio of 1 : 1 to 1.2 : 1, wherein the macrostructure of the catalyst predominantly comprises generally spheroid particles consisting of stacks of integrally associated sheets of catalytic material is also disclosed.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of oxidation catalysts containing mixed oxides of vanadium and phosphorus, which catalysts are particularly effective in the oxidation of n-butane, n-butenes, 1,3-butadiene or a mixture thereof with molecular oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the vapour phase to produce high yields of maleic anhydride with good selectivity comprises introducing a vanadium compound into an olefinic halogenated organic liquid medium, adding a phosphorus-containing compound to the medium reducing at least a portion of the vanadium to a +4 valence state either prior to or subsequent to the addition of the phosphorus-containing compound, and recovering, drying and calcining the resulting vanadium-phosphorus oxide catalyst precursor.
