Abstract: Novel rhodium based amorphous metal alloys having the formula RhrAa where: A is B, P, As and mixtures thereof; r is from about 50 to 96 percent; and a is from about 4 to 50 percent. Novel rhodium based amorphous metal alloys are also based on the formula RhrBbDd where: D is Ir, Pd, Ru, Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, Y, Hf and mixtures thereof; r is from about 50 to 96 percent; b is from about 4 to 50 percent; and d is from about 0 to 60 percent; and r + b + d = 100. Novel process for the generation of halogens from halide-containing solutions can be performed by employing the rhodium based metal alloys of the present invention.

Abstract: Amorphous metal alloy powders are synthesised by a solid state reaction. Such reaction may comprise disposing at least one metal-bearing compound in a liquid medium and reducing the metal-bearing compound so as to obtain a substantially amorphous metal alloy. Precursor components that include the elements of the amorphous alloy are chemically reduced to yield an intimate mixture. The resultant intimate mixture, as obtained or after heat-treating, exhibits amorphous characteristics. These powders are suitable for forming solid amorphous shapes.

The composition obtained is an amorphous alloy composition or can be made so by heat treating at a temperature below the crystallization temperature of the amorphous metal alloy desired to be formed.

A process for the use of the foregoing iridium based alloys as anodes for the electrolysis of halide-containing electrolyte solutions is also provided.
