Abstract: 111,099. Stewart, W. Nov. 10, 1916, [Convention date]. Couplings. -The spigot and socket unions of electric lamps, domestic irons, toasters, &c. are locked against disconnexion by means of a ring 12 having opposite slots 13 and a spring 15, the ends of which protrude inwardly and engage the bayonet slots 20 of the connexion. The ring is placed over the slotted member 19 of the connexion with its slots 13 alined with the slots 20 as shown in Fig. 5. Insertion of the pins 22 on the member 17 into the slots 20 rotates the ring which allows the ends of the spring 14 to engage the slots 20 or openings specially provided. A sleeve 22 is positioned so as to surround the parts of the connexion and prevents the disconnexion of the parts by manipulation of the spring unless the lamp 18 is fractured and the holder 23 deformed to permit the removal of the sleeve. In place of the ring, a pair of rotatably slidable members attached to the part 19 may be employed.

According tc the invention, the cutter comprises two blades 1, 2, pivoted together, having depending tails 4, 5, one of which is pivoted to a fixed pivot 10 and the other to the end of a swinging arm 7. The blades are mounted in a casing provided with a cover-plate 13, Figs. 4 and 5, on which is a sleeve 15 adapted to slip over the bayonet. The sleeve has inwardly projecting springs 17 to grip the blade, and the casing is locked to the bayonet by a spring catch 20, Fig. 4

Abstract: 4644. Gemmell, D., and Stewart, W. Feb. 23. Hatchways.-The tarpaulins covering a ship's hatchway are secured by a batten consisting of two bars 1. 3, one of which is adapted to slide over the other and is fitted with wedge surfaces 4 which engage cleats 5 on the coaming. The two bars 1, 3 are kept together by studs 7, which may be fitted with clamping-nuts 10. By sliding the bar 3, the wedges force the bar 1 towards the coaming, securing the tarpaulin.

Abstract: 26,858. Stewart, J., and Stewart, W. Nov. 19. Charging.-Fuel is supplied to a gas-producer through hoppers, each of which consists of a cylinder 33 fitted to slide in bearings and so arranged that when it is raised the fuel enters through openings 34. The hopper is adapted to be engaged by a lever connected with the outlet gas-valve, so that it is impossible to open a hopper to the fuel chamber when the gas outlet from such chamber is open.

Abstract: 8071. Stewart, W. April 5. Centrifugal-action l u b r i c a t o r s.-A lubricator for loose pulleys, shafts &c. comprises a casing 1 secured to the revolving part, and containing bent tubes 2, 3. Under centrifugal action the lubricant in the casing passes through the tube 2 to an outlet 4, and, at the same time, air enters by an inlet 5 and the tube 3. The inlet and outlet are regulated by a screw 6 formed with reduced portions 7, 8, which are so placed that the air inlet 5 is restricted before the outlet 4 for the lubricant.

Abstract: 24,325. Stewart, W., and Stewart, A. Nov. 10. Bookcases.- The parts of bookcases are made to facilitate their construction and dismantling. In one portion of the structure A, Fig. 6, a groove G is formed, and a metal plate S is screwed on the edge so as partly to overlap. A narrow groove is formed in the adjoining portion B, which is simply slid along the groove G, the narrow groove engaging with the plate S. Each side of the wide groove G may carry a plate engaging with two slots in the fitted piece. In another form, Fig. 9, an L-shaped plate S is attached, with a turned edge fitting in a groove in the adjoining piece. Fig. 2 shows one of several slight modifications which are adopted. Fig. 13 shows a drawer constructed by this method.
