Abstract: 9891. Stewart, W. J. April 29. Excavating; piles. -Relates to means for retaining the excavated material within the inner tube described in Specification No. 14,647, A.D. 1906, in excavating for concrete and other piles, well sinking, and similar work. The lower end of the inner tube 1, Fig. 1, is provided with one or more cross-bars or plates 2 passing across the bottom of the tube and formed with a knifeedge below and a broader part above to support the excavated material. In some cases parallel or more or less tapered bars may be employed. The bar is preferably provided with lugs 6, Fig. 3, which are passed through openings in a ring 5, Fig. 1, and held in a space 8 between rings 4, 5 secured within the tube 1. Portable and interchangeable ends having a variety of arrangements of cross-bars, such, for example, as is shown in Fig. 6, may be provided for use with different kinds of soil. In forming concrete piles or the like, after withdrawal of the inner tube 1, a plain tube may be inserted having an inner diameter equal to that of the shoulders 12 of the outer tube 13. The concrete being filled into the plain tube, this tube and the outer tube may be afterwards withdrawn ; or the concrete may be filled into the outer tube, which is then withdrawn, leaving the shoe in the ground.
