Abstract: 122,045. Stewart, W. J., Woolcock, J., and Kruse, H. Jan. 17, 1918. Concrete vessels.-Reinforced-concrete ships are built up of assembled pre-cast complete transverse frames a, Figs. 1 and 4, formed with apertures b through which is laid the longitudinal reinforcements of the stringers, keelsons, deck beams, and other longitudinal members which are all cast in situ, the hull being then completed in situ with its reinforcement interlinked with the frames to form a monolithic structure. Stout transverse or fairing bars g are laid parallel with the edges of the frames a and connected thereto by linking elements d in the form of loops, ae shown, or loose ends bent round the bars g. These fairing bars support the longitudinal bars of the inner and outer meshwork reinforcement, and these in turn support lighter transverse bars. The pre-cast frames are supported on concrete pads h, Fig. 5, recessed therein, as shown, and grouted through a hole h . These pads become incorporated in the bottom slab when the same is cast in situ.

Abstract: 28,652. Stewart, W. J. Dec. 15, Piles; caissons.-A thin shell 1 is provided with a strong annular or conical shoe 2 secured tc it and having a shoulder 3, upon which is driven a heavy tube 4 closely fitting and supporting the thin shell 1. When the outer shell has been driven the required depth, the inner tube is withdrawn and the shell is filled with concrete. A modification is described in which the driving-tube 4 is short, and is driven by a plate covering the upper end.

Abstract: 117,504. Stewart, W. J. July 25, 1917. Concretes of low specific gravity are formed by fixing moulded elements of a shapable material such as vitreous clay, or non-vitreous clay, subsequently receiving a vitreous coating and sanding. The aggregate is prepared by moulding clay in uniform moulds, e.g. of spherical form, burning, glazing to render non-absorbent, and causing sand to adhere to the glaze before cool to produce a rough surface. Such aggregates, in differing forms and sizes, from a quarter to three-quarters of an inch in diameter, are employed with sand and lime to constitute concretes, which, if they are to be moulded, may have the aggregate elements systematically arranged according to size in the mould. The matrix material, such as cement, is caused to flow in from below upwards preferably under pressure so as to displace air and obviate bubbles.

Abstract: 3444. Stewart, W. J., [Assignee of Frankignoul, E.]. Feb. 14, [Convention date]. Piling; piles, driving.-In sinking metallic tubing for the formation of concrete piling for foundations, of the kind wherein a movable metallic piece resting on a rim near the bottom of the tube is struck by a monkey, a wooden or other elastic member k is interposed between the ordinary inelastic member c and the ground. The wooden piece k may be provided with a metal cone l or may itself be pointed and prolonged to any suitable length, in which case it may remain in the ground to serve as the base of the pile formed by ramming concrete into the tubing b. Water-tight rings r may be placed between the wooden piece k and the ring e.

Abstract: 8488. Stewart, W. J. April 8. Piles; piles, driving. - Hollow wooden and other piles, which may, after driving, be filled with concrete, are constructed of stout longitudinal ribs 1 alternating with lighter ribs 2 and connected together, ior example, by means of stays not shown in Fig. 2. A light sheathing 4 of wood or other suitable material is connected to the ribs; and on the outside of the sheathing are secured longitudinal pieces 5 of hoop iron &c., to the exterior of which are fastened hoops 6. The shoe, which consists of a baulk of timber 7 having an iron or steel point 8, is attached to the ribs 1, 2, and the sheathing 4 and vertical pieces 5 may also be brought down over the shoe. The pile is driven by means of a core provided with fixed or adjustable horizontal or longitudinal ribs which contact with the lighter ribs of the pile. Fig. 8 shows a hollow core 10 with ribs 11 which are made to collapse inwardly by means of toggles 16 operated by a rod 17. Fig. 6 shows a solid core 10 projecting through the bottom of a pile and provided with shoulders 12, as described in Specification 7454/09, or with projections 14, 15 for assisting in pulling the pile downwards.

Abstract: 7454. Stewart, W. J. May 28, 1908. Piles ; p i l e s, driving. - Relates to the method of driving hollow reinforced concrete piles by means of a driver acting within the pile, and formed with projections engaging with projections on the interior surfaces of the pile. The improvements comprise the use of segmental projections 11, Fig. 1, on the driver, and corresponding segmental projections 10 on the pile, or, as an alternative, pivoted levers 13, Fig. 4, which are separated by means of disks 15 on a rod 16, may be caused to engage with shoulders 12, on which are placed cushions 6. A collapsible shoe, Fig. 7, may be employed in combination with these drivers. This comprises arms 19, to which a light mantle 22 is temporarily secured, and movably pivoted to the driver by means of pivots 21 running in slots 20. When the driver is withdrawn, the mantle 22 is left in the ground, the disk 23 rises into a cavity, and the arms 19 collapse. The driver may be constructed of T-irons, Fig. 6, bolted or riveted together and carrying collars or projections, not shown. Specification 28,269/07 is referred to.
