    Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase the amount of platinum and to shorten a setting time by extruding an organic siloxane polymer which forms the core of an optical fiber and thermosetting resin which forms the clad at the same time by using an extruder. CONSTITUTION:A normal tube extruder is so reconstructed as to supply the organic siloxane polymer to an air injection port at a die point. This extruder injects the thermosetting resin which forms the clad from the resin injection port 1 of a head by this extruder and the liquid organic siloxane polymer is sent in from an opening 2 used as an air insertion port; and they are extruded from a die 3 at the same time to form the core and clad. This clad is made of fluororesin and the organic siloxane polymer of the core is cross-linked ad set by the reaction of hydroxyl which uses a platinum compound as a catalyst. Further, the organic siloxane polymer of the core is cross-linked and set by radiation irradiation.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an optical waveguide which is protected by a light transparent body which does not detach from the optical waveguide by joining the cap-shaped light transparent body which consists of transparent plastic or inorg. glass and is threaded on the inside surface to one end of the optical waveguide. CONSTITUTION:The optical waveguide to be protected consists of a core 11, a clad 12 and the light transparent body 13. The inside surface of the cap-shaped body 13 is threaded but the outside surface at the end of the clad 12 is not threaded. The transparent plastic material used for the cap-shaped light transparent body is exemplified by polystyrene, polycarbonate, epoxy resin, etc., and various shapes including concave and convex lens shapes, columnar shape, etc., are usable for the cap shape. The light transparent body is, therefore, mechanically joined to the optical waveguide by pushing or screwing the light transparent body onto the end of the clad, by which the secure joining is obtd.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the transmission loss by forming a core-clad structure and using elastomer provided with rubber elasticity by irradiation as the material of at least the core. CONSTITUTION:A core-clad structure is formed and elastomer provided with rubber elasticity by irradiation is used as the material of at least the core. A butadiene polymer or a siloxane polymer may be used as the elastomer but a liq. or gummy siloxane polymer is preferably used. In order to increase the quantity of light transmitted, the difference in refractive index between the core and clad is preferably increased by using a siloxane polymer having phenyl or naphthyl groups as the core material and a siloxane polymer contg. fluorine as the clad material.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive sensor receiving no effect of an electric field and a magnetic field and having a long life and a simple structure, by forming an optical wave guide part from a transparent elastomer and changing the light transmitting quantity of the optical wave guide by elastic deformation. CONSTITUTION:A sensor is constituted of an optical wave guide consisting of an optical wave guide part and a clad and the optical wave guide part comprises a transparent elastomer and the light transmitting quantity of the optical wave guide part is changed by elastic deformation. The optical wave guide used in this sensor is elastically deformed by load and changed in its light transmitting quantity. Load may be added to a part or entire part of the optical wave guide. The optical wave guide restores elastically when load is removed and can be used repeatedly. The material of the optical wave guide comprises the transparent elastomer and, as the transparent elastomer, a polysiloxane elastomer, polyurethane rubber and polybutadiene rubber are designated. The polysiloxane elastomer is especially pref. because of excellent transparency.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To vary the refractive index of a siloxane polymer freely and greatly, by crosslinking a product of hydrosilylation between a specified siloxane compound or silane compound and a specified siloxane polymer with a silanol compound or silicone compound having at least two silicon hydride groups. CONSTITUTION:A hydrosilylation reaction is effected between a siloxane compound or silane compound (a) having at least one silicon hydride group and having a substituent for controlling a refractive index and a siloxane polymer (b) having nonconjugated unsaturated bonds. Said siloxane polymer having side chains into which substituents are introduced by this reaction is crosslinked by a hydrosilylation reaction with a siloxane compound or silicone compound (c) having at least two silicon hydride groups through nonconjugated unsaturated bonds in the siloxane polymer which are left unreacted in the first hydrosilylation reaction. In this way, a crosslinked siloxane polymer for optical use can be formed.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To vary greatly and freely the refractive index of the formed liquid siloxane polymer, by effecting a hydrosilylation reaction between a siloxane polymer having nonconjugated unsaturated double bonds and a specified siloxane compound or a specified silane compound. CONSTITUTION:A hydrosilylation reaction is effected between a siloxane polymer (a) having nonconjugated unsaturated bonds and a siloxane compound or silane compound (b) having at least one silicon hydride group and a substituent for controlling a refractive index. By this reaction, the substituent for controlling refractive index is introduced into the side chains of the above siloxane polymer to form a liquid siloxane polymer for optical use. The substituents for controlling refractive index include aromatic hydrocarbon groups and fluorine-containing hydrocarbon groups. For example, aromatic hydrocarbon groups such as phenyl, naphthyl, anthryl and pyrenyl groups and fluorine- substituted alkyl groups (e.g., trifluoropropyl) are desirable.
