    Abstract: The invention provides a cross-linked optical siloxane polymer having a group for modifying the refractive index of the polymer which is introduced in a side chain of the polymer by a hydrosilyl reaction. The hydrosilyl reaction may proceed according to one of the following two schemes. In the first scheme, a compound (A) having a carbon-carbon unsaturated bond and a group for modifying a refractive index, and a siloxane polymer (B) having a silicon hydride group are reacted wherein the molar ratio of the silicon hydride group to the carbon-carbon unsaturated bond is more than 1. In the second scheme, a compound (A') having a silicon hydride group and a group for modifying a refractive index, and a siloxane polymer (B') having a carbon-carbon unsaturated bond are reacted wherein the molar ratio of the carbon-carbon unsaturated bond to the silicon hydride group is more than 1. The resulting polymer is cross-linked by a hydrosilyl reaction of the unreacted silicon hydride groups of the siloxane polymer (B) with a compound (C) having at least two carbon-carbon unsaturated bond when the system (1) is employed, or by a hydrosilyl reaction of the unreacted carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds of the siloxane polymer (B') with a compound (C') having at least two silicon hydride groups when the system (2) is employed. The refractive index of the resulting siloxane polymer is easily and precisely modified and can be used for the manufacture of a variety of optical elements.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate a decrease in the quantity of transmitted light by a temp. or humidity change by using a polymer having a specific org. siloxane unit and hydrophilic unit as a light guiding part. CONSTITUTION:This light guide has the light guiding part and clad or the light guiding part, clad and sheath. The light guiding part consists of the polymer having the org. siloxane unit expressed by forming formula I and the hydrophilic unit having a hydrophilic group. In formula I, R and R are hydrocarbon groups of 1-12C which are the same or different. The hydrophilic group of the hydrophilic unit is particularly preferably, for example, a methyl ester group. The undesirable influence of the humidity and temp. on light transmission is thereby eliminated.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To control the passage and interruption of light and to simplify and miniaturize an optical switch by using a shape memory alloy to elastically shrink a light guide part. CONSTITUTION:The light guide 2 is pinched by using a pinching member 3 consisting of the shape memory alloy 31 and a rigid metal plate 32. The light guide 2 is constituted of a light guide part 21, a clad 22 and a supporting tube 23. The rigidity of the alloy 31 of this optical switch 1 is relatively low and is deformed to a peak shape by receiving the elastic force of the tube 23 when the temp. is lower than the working temp. of the switch. The guide 2 is hardly deformed and the light passes the guide part 21 without being attenuated. The alloy 31 induces martensite transformation and presses the guide 2 at above the working temp. The guide part 21 is, therefore, elastically shrunk to a crushed shape and the light can no longer pass said part. The passage and interruption of the light are thus executed according to temp. changes.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous operation, by intertwisting one light guide passage and one rod made of an elastomer. CONSTITUTION:A guide passage 1 and a rod 2 made of an elastomer are intertwisted and light advances in the direction shown by an arrow. When light having definite intensity is allowed to be incident on the guide passage 1, since the guide passage receives bending deformation and light is leaked out of the guide passage corresponding to said deformation, the intensity of emitting light becomes low. By this constitution, by applying small load at any position in the longitudinal direction, the function as a sensor can be developed and erroneous operation can be prevented.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the adhesion of a dust to the surface of a core which is a cause of a transmission loss by flowing a liquid polymer downwardly so as to be a core forming liquid polymer in an inner layer and a clad forming liquid polymer in an outer layer in order to form the core and the clad respectively, and by cross-linking the liquid polymer during flowing downwardly. CONSTITUTION:The core forming liquid polymer and the clad forming liquid polymer are fed to a coaxial nozzle 3 from storage tanks 1, 2 respectively and at the same time, are flowed down-wardly. The flowing liquid polymer is irradiated the suitable cross-linking source from at least one direction to form a cross-link of the liquid polymer. The radiation (for example, a alpha ray, a beta ray, a gamma ray and a X ray), an ultraviolet ray or a heat are used as the suitable cross-linking source. The preferable radiation is the beta ray, namely an accelated electron beam. The heating is carried out by an infra-red ray or a heater.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the titled polymer containing a substituent group and having a refractive index variable freely within a wide range, by racting a siloxane polymer containing hydrogenated silicon with a specific organic compound having substituent group for the control of refractive index and crosslinking the resultant polymer. CONSTITUTION:The hydrosilylation reaction of (A) an organic compound having one or more carbon-carbon unsaturated bonds and a substituent group for the control of refractive index (preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon group or a fluorine-containing hydrocarbon group) with (B) a siloxane polymer having hydrogenated silicon group to obtain a siloxane polymer having the above substituent group introduced into the side chain of the above siloxane polymer. The objective polymer can be produced by crosslinking the product by the hydrosilylation reaction of the hydrogenated silicon remained in the above reaction with (C) an organic compound having two or more carbon-carbon unsaturated bond.
