Abstract:
Valve syringes of the invention include a syringe barrel (12) and an applicator valve (30) adapted to rotate relative to the barrel (12) between closed and open positions. In the open position, one or more slots in the applicator valve (30) align with one or more holes (34) in a discharge end of the syringe barrel (12) in order to allow fluid material to flow therethrough. In a closed position, the contact surface of the applicator valve (30) occludes the holes (34) in the barrel in order to seal them and prevent flow of fluid material therethrough. The valve syringe may include structure that increases the sealing engagement between the syringe barrel (12) and applicator valve (30) when rotated toward at least one of the open or closed positions. The applicator valve (30) may include an applicator tip that is either integrally or detachably connected to the applicator valve (30). The valve syringe may also include a plunger (20) adapted to expel fluid material contained in the syringe barrel (20) through the discharge end and into the applicator valve (30).
Abstract:
A bite block system (170) for maintaining the mouth of the patient in an open position during a dental procedure. In one embodiment, the bite block (90) includes a plastically deformable material on at least a surface thereof for making an impression of the patient's teeth. Such customized bite blocks (90) provide greater safety and comfort. In another aspect, a tongue suppressing bite block system (170) includes a bite block (90) and a tongue suppressor (160) adjustably attached thereto so that the tongue suppressor (160) can be adjusted horizontally or vertically relative to the bite block (90) to account for variations in the size of patient's mouths, teeth and tongues. In another aspect of the invention, an anatomical tongue suppressor (160) is provided for use with a bite block (90). The anatomical tongue suppressor (160) wraps around the side and underneath the tongue in order to cradle it in a more comfortable and secure fashion when in use with a bite block (90). The anatomical tongue suppressor (160) may optionally include a saliva aspiration port that permits the aspiration of saliva through one or more lumens within the tongue suppressor.
Abstract:
A tongue brush (10) of the present invention includes (i) a handle (12) for grasping the tongue cleaning device during a tongue cleaning procedure; and (ii) a brush head (13). The brush head (13) includes: (A) a head (13) attached to the handle; and (ii) a plurality of fibers (46) flocked onto a surface of head (13). The brush head (13) has a height (H) that is substantially greater than the width (W) thereof, such that the brush head (13) has a relatively low vertical profile to minimize the elicitation of a gag reflex when the device is used to clean the tongue. The handle (12) may be a manual or motorized (112) device.
Abstract:
Wax-based compositions for making barrier layers used in oral treatment devices are thermally stable when formed into a flat sheet or three-dimensional article to a temperature of at least 45°C and are plastically deformable at room temperature (25°C). The wax-based compositions include a wax fraction homogeneously blended with a polymer fraction. The wax fraction includes at least one wax and the polymer fraction includes at least one polymer selected such that, when the at least one wax and at least one polymer are homogeneously blended together, they yield a wax-based composition having the desired properties of thermal stability and plastic deformability. Barrier layers in oral treatment devices made from such wax-based compositions are dimensionally stable to a temperature of at least 40°C without external support and can be plastically deformed in a user's mouth to become at least partially customized to the size and shape of user's unique dentition.
Abstract:
Injection needle devices are disclosed for administering a local anesthetic into tough, dense ligamentary tissue surrounding a tooth. The injection needle is a two- part needle (104) that includes a proximal needle portion (106) formed of metal, ceramic or rigid plastic and a distal needle portion (108) formed of ceramic or hardened metal. The distal penetrating needle portion (108) has an exposed length not more than about 8 mm, and a maximum outside diameter of about 25 gauge. At the transition between the proximal needle portion (106) and the distal needle portion (108) there can be an abrupt stop surface (110) for limiting penetration through tissue. Alternatively, the proximal needle portion (106) can have a tapered surface that permits penetration of the tapered surface into tissue. The injection needle device is designed to minimize pain and prevent buckling of the distal needle portion (108).
Abstract:
A dental treatment tray (100) used to provide a desired treatment is injection molded from a composition that includes at least one thermoplastic resin and at least plasticizer. The plasticized thermoplastic resin permits the dental treatment tray (100) to be injection molded even while having a wall thickness less than about 0.015 inch. The plasticizer increases the melt flow index of the thermoplastic resin while in a molten state, which facilitates complete filling of the mold cavity by the thermoplastic resin. The plasticizer also softens the thermoplastic polymer while in a solidified state in order to yield a dental tray (100) that is even more flexible and comfortable for the user to wear.
Abstract:
A dental curing light (100) including an elongate wand (102) having a proximal end (104) and a distal end (106), a plurality of LEDs (108, 110) disposed at or near a distal end (106) of the elongate wand (102) and a printed circuit board (112) for mounting the plurality of LEDs (108). The LEDs (108, 110) include a main through mount LED (110) and a plurality of surface mount LEDs (108) positioned around the main through mount LED (110). The main LED (110) is through mounted relative to the printed circuit board (112) such that the power connections of the main through mount LED (110) are made through a hole or holes in the printed circuit board (112). The power connections of the main through mount LED (110) are made on an opposite surface of the printed circuit board (112) relative to the "top" surface to which the surface mount LEDs (108) are mounted.
Abstract:
Dental bleaching devices (10) in the shape of a dental tray, strip or patch include a barrier layer (18), a dental bleaching composition (28), and a protective adhesive composition (24, 26) that protects a person's gums from the dental bleaching composition during use. The barrier layer (18) protects the bleaching and protective adhesive compositions (24, 26, 28) ftom saliva or moisture during use. The dental bleaching composition is positioned (28) so as to contact a person's tooth surfaces when the bleaching device (10) is in use. The protective adhesive composition (24, 26) is positioned so as to shield a person's gums from the bleaching composition when the bleaching device is in use. The dental bleaching composition (28) and protective adhesive composition (24, 26) can be in the form of a gel or they may be substantially solid. They preferably include a tissue adhesion agent comprising a hydrophilic polymer.
Abstract:
A syringe apparatus for mixing and delivering a two-part material has (i) a syringe barrel (12) and a plunger (14). The apparatus also has a paddle (16) slidably coupled to the plunger (14). A distal insertion end (44) of the plunger (14) has a slot (46) therein. A proximal end (51) of the paddle (16) is slidably coupled within the slot (46). The paddle (16) is movable between an extended position and a contracted position with respect to the plunger (14). Upon placing material into the barrel (12), such as through an opening (26) in the wall of the barrel (12), the paddle (16) can be employed to mix the material. After such mixing, the plunger (14) is pressed further into the barrel (12) without removing the paddle (16), thereby expressing the mixed material from the barrel (12) and compressing the paddle (16) into the slot (46) of the plunger.
