Abstract: SHEET REVERSING MECHANISM A sheet reversing mechanism having drive rolls independently activated for driving sheets into and out of a sheet reversing station at different rates. A first shaft supports a drive roll engaging an idler roll supported on a second shaft and a drive roll supported on the second shaft engages an idler roll supported on a third shaft. The diameters of the idler roll and the drive roll on the second shaft are different providing corrugations in sheets driven out of the reversing station.

Abstract: A paper conditioner re-moisturizes paper immediately following fusing by rolls (62,64) to restore paper temperature and moisture equilibrium and reduce curl. The paper conditioner has plumbing that includes a pump, supply lines, overflow lines, metering blade lines and return lines. A soaker hose (150) is used to uniformly distribute conditioning agent to a wick (125). The soaker hose (150) has pin-holes that are evenly spaced adjacent the wick (125). The wick (125) is a high density material, such as, cotton that contacts and supplies the conditioning agent to metering rolls (108,109). These rolls contact donor rolls (104,105,106,107), which contact moisturizing rolls (102,103) which contact the paper. Metering blades (115,116) are used to remove excess conditioning agent from the moisturizing rolls (102,103).

Abstract: A system which controls via controller (100) image dependent curl by moisturizing a sheet immediately after fusing by rollers (62,64) determines critical machine and environmental characteristics through a series of on-line sensors. An operator selectable table is used to indicate the type of sheet loaded in each sheet holding tray. Machine software then uses this information to determine how much moisture should be added to each side of the sheet in order to achieve a flat sheet when it reaches equilibrium. The moisture is added by transfer rolls (102,103) which are driven at a variable speed by servo motors (115) in the opposite direction to sheet movement to vary the quantity of moisture that is added to each side of the sheet.

Abstract: A sheet stacking and registration system (10) particularly suited for high speed sequentially stacking of the flimsy printed sheets output of a high speed reproduction apparatus (14) in a sheet stacking area (20), with a stacking registration position (30); with a vacuum belt sheet transport system (40) acquiring only a limited lead edge area of the sheets and transporting them over the stacking area with non-slip sheet feeding towards the registration position; and an integral system (50) peeling the lead edges of the sheets off of the vacuum transport and guiding them downwardly and towards the lead edge registration position while reducing but partially maintaining the sheet's vacuum acquisition, and applying a normal force, preferably with a roller (56) pressing down the lead edges of the peeled off sheet against the previously stacked sheets adjacent the registration position, to frictionally slow the sheet as it approaches the registration position, and also holding down the sheet after it reaches the stacking position. The sheet transport may have spaced belt flights (44a,44b) with spaced patterns (82) of vacuum apertures (80) spaced between substantially unapertured areas along the belts, and a synchronized belt drive to synchronously engage the lead edge areas of the incoming sheets. An upstream natural arcuate inversion path (66) with a side registration system (70) may be integrated therewith.

Abstract: A compact machine architecture is realized by combining the functions of copy sheet feeding and stacking into one integral apparatus (30). The apparatus (30) is initially completely filled with copy sheets (29) to be moved into the transfer/fusing area of a copier/duplicator machine. A vertically translatable stacker tray (80) is positioned above the copy sheet input supply and is moved downward in vertical synchronism with copy sheets (29) being fed from the input stack (64). A paper feed roller (86), attached to the bottom of the tray (80), continually feeds the top sheet from the input supply. As the input sheet stack is consumed, the output (feed) copies are deposited onto the stacker tray (80). As operation continues the supply stack (64) is depleted while the finished stack (64) increases, but the overall volume occupied by the copy sheets (29) remains the same. Since there is no "empty" volume in the apparatus, the size and cost of the unit is greatly reduced.

Abstract: In an automatic document handling system for a copier, with a system for feeding and registering document sheets, including an across-platen transport system including a document belt system and a vacuum system for retaining documents against the document belt system by suction, a common path is used for feeding either conventional cut-sheets or continuous-web (CF) documents. The vacuum system automatically maintaining a first vacuum level high enough to retain the cut-sheets against the document belts with sufficient force to resist slippage and function as their primary platen transport system, and automatically reduces the vacuum to a substantially-lower level for CF documents, permitting slippage of CF documents relative to the document belt system. The CF documents are de-skewing upstream of the platen and pulled across the platen from downstream thereof, to provide a dual mode system in which the platen transport system provides for low-frictional relative movement and an imaging background surface for CF documents, but is not their primary transport.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of more efficiently copying sets of document sheets having a small number of document sheets per set on a copier with a recirculating document handler, onto plural collated copy sheet sets, with plural copying recirculations of all the document sheets in the recirculating document handler by automatically commonly recirculating for copying in the same recirculating document handler a plurality of different small document sets, and automatically separating the plural copy sheets made therefrom into separate collated sub-sets, each copy sub-set corresponding to one of the different small document sets, and wherein the number of the subsets is greater than the plural number of document copying recirculations, the separation being controlled automatically in response to the number of document sheets in the commonly recirculated small document sets. The recirculation of documents in the recirculating document handler may be automatically halted after the initial copying circulation of the original document set, for the loading of a copy set thereof, in response to the counting of a number of the original sheets of less than a present number providing efficient copying. The automatic separating may be provided by a compiler/finisher for the collated copy sheet sets, which normally operates only once per copying circulation of all the documents in the recirculating document handler, but which herein is automatically operated a greater number of times corresponding to the number of the plural small sets being commonly recirculated.

Abstract: A precollation copying apparatus with a recirculating document handler (RDH) (12) in which a set of original document sheets (16) is placed and normally plurally recirculated and copies once per circulation at the copier imaging station (14) to produce a selected plural number of precollated copy sheet sets therefrom in a normal copy sheet output path (36 or 40). A selectable alternative copy sheet path (44) is provided for feeding copy cheets from said normal copy sheet output path (36 or 40) of said copier into an input station of said RDH (12) with a selectably actuatable copy sheet output path deflector (32) diverting a first set of copy sheets (18) made from original document sheets (16) into said alternative copy sheet path 44. The RDH (12) automatically ejects the original document sheets (16) without circulating them after they have been copied only once, and then the RDH automatically plurally recirculates the set of copy sheets (18) in lieu of and as if they were original document sheets to copy the remainder of the selected number of copy sets from those copy sheets rather than original document sheets.
