Abstract: A reproduction system incorporating a processor for making copies, a document handler for automatically feeding in seriatim documents to be copied to the processor and thereafter returning the documents to the document supply tray for either removal or recycling, and a sorter for either stacking or collating the copies. The sorter includes a procession of copy receiving trays and gates to route the copies into selected ones of the sorter trays. The sorter is arranged to either collate or stack, and is pre-set so that when the sorter bins are empty, the copies are automatically routed to a predetermined one of the sorter bins.

Abstract: A compact machine architecture is realized by combining the functions of copy sheet feeding and stacking into one integral apparatus (30). The apparatus (30) is initially completely filled with copy sheets (29) to be moved into the transfer/fusing area of a copier/duplicator machine. A vertically translatable stacker tray (80) is positioned above the copy sheet input supply and is moved downward in vertical synchronism with copy sheets (29) being fed from the input stack (64). A paper feed roller (86), attached to the bottom of the tray (80), continually feeds the top sheet from the input supply. As the input sheet stack is consumed, the output (feed) copies are deposited onto the stacker tray (80). As operation continues the supply stack (64) is depleted while the finished stack (64) increases, but the overall volume occupied by the copy sheets (29) remains the same. Since there is no "empty" volume in the apparatus, the size and cost of the unit is greatly reduced.

Abstract: A document handling system and method for automatically and successively transporting documents is provided. The system includes a primary path and means feeding documents in a predetermined sequence along the primary path from a stack of documents. The document handler system also provides a means for transporting selected ones of the document along the path to an upstream portion of the primary path out of the sequence and means for returning the selected ones of the documents to the other fed documents so that the combined documents are arranged in a collated manner corresponding to the predetermined sequence. The method of the present invention includes the steps of feeding documents in sequence along the path from a stack of documents, diverting selected ones of the fed documents from the defined path to an upstream portion of the path output so that the combined documents are in sequence again. The invention includes a secondary or shunt path which acts as a buffer for holding sheet units previously passing through the processing station. The secondary path is arranged to permit selected return of ones of the documents in the secondary path to the processing station while providing sequential return of the documents to the primary path for transport to the sheet output. Thus, the document handling system and method provides for selective reprocessing of documents to promote job recovery operations.

Abstract: In a copying system utilizing a recirculating document handler (RDH) presenting documents to the platen of a copier for copying, with an RDH document stacking tray and an additional document input directly to the platen, and a three zone distributed drives feeding system for first feeding the documents from the stacking tray to the platen, secondly feeding the documents over the platen for copying, and thirdly feeding the documents from the platen back to the stacking tray after they have been copied, to normally form a complete document recirculation path, and sensors for sensing document jams and the position of jammed documents in the document path connecting with a control system controlling the RDH, including stopping the RDH in response to sensing a jam and determining which documents have been copied before a jam and providing instructional displays to the operator for operator jam clearance (document removal) and job recovery; an improved jam clearance and job recovery system determining whether a document jam has resulted in a jammed document being present in a first, second, or third document path jam zone, corresponding to the three distributed drive zones, and automatically providing a preliminary job recovery operation before the RDH is fully stopped, by correspondingly selectably independently operating the document feeding zones to feed unjammed documents in the third jam zone to the stacking tray or feed unjammed documents in the first jam zone to the platen, so that documents are directed to be operator removed from only one zone, if any. The operator is variably display instructed to place these removed documents either face up in the stacking tray, or face down in the seperate document input, depending on the jam detection position and document removal position and copier operating condition, and the copier is restarted for job completion without manual document reordering.

Abstract: In a precollation copying apparatus with a recirculating document handler (RDH) in which a set of plural original document sheets is placed and normally plurally recirculated and copied once per circulation at the copier imaging station to produce a selected plural number of precollated copy sheet sets therefrom in a normal copy sheet output path, the improvement including a selectable alternative copy sheet path for feeding copy sheets from said normal copy sheet output path of said copier into an input station of said RDH with a selectably actuatable copy sheet output path detector diverting a first set of copy sheets made from original document sheets into said alternative copy sheet path; and wherein the RDH automatically ejects the original document sheets without circulating them after they have been copied only once, and then the RDH automatically plurally recirculates the set of copy sheets in lieu of and as if they were original document sheets to copy the remainder of the selected number of copy sets from those copy sheets rather than original document sheets.

Abstract: A paper conditioner (100) to control image dependent curl in a copier/printer includes a reservoir for storing a quantity of liquid, a pair of rolls (102,104;103,105) in contact with one another so as to define a nip (106;107), and a metering roll (108;109) associated with the reservoir and one of the pair of rolls. The metering roll forms a nip with one of the pair of rolls to direct a controlled flow of liquid from the reservoir to the nip area. Seals (140) located at opposed ends of the metering roll (109) and the roll (103) with which it forms a nip prevent the flow of excess liquid from the ends of the metering roll.

Abstract: A sheet stacking and registration system (10) particularly suited for high speed sequentially stacking of the flimsy printed sheets output of a high speed reproduction apparatus (14) in a sheet stacking area (20), with a stacking registration position (30); with a vacuum belt sheet transport system (40) acquiring only a limited lead edge area of the sheets and transporting them over the stacking area with non-slip sheet feeding towards the registration position; and an integral system (50) peeling the lead edges of the sheets off of the vacuum transport and guiding them downwardly and towards the lead edge registration position while reducing but partially maintaining the sheet's vacuum acquisition, and applying a normal force, preferably with a roller (56) pressing down the lead edges of the peeled off sheet against the previously stacked sheets adjacent the registration position, to frictionally slow the sheet as it approaches the registration position, and also holding down the sheet after it reaches the stacking position. The sheet transport may have spaced belt flights (44a,44b) with spaced patterns (82) of vacuum apertures (80) spaced between substantially unapertured areas along the belts, and a synchronized belt drive to synchronously engage the lead edge areas of the incoming sheets. An upstream natural arcuate inversion path (66) with a side registration system (70) may be integrated therewith.

Abstract: A copier with a (RDH) (20), has a document stacking tray (21) into which a set of document sheets is loaded for recirculative precollation copying, and a separate (SADH) document inlet (22) provided for semiautomatic non-precollation copying, utilizing a document gate for selectably directing documents to this tray or to be ejected from the RDH. All document jobs to be copied may be preloaded, and left unattended, for automatic sequential loading and copying, in a common stack, face-down, as a batched plurality of intermixed documents and document set jobs interleaved with job slip sheets, in a job loader (F) adjacent the RDH which sequentially top feeds the documents into the SADH document entrance. Documents selected by slip sheet indicia or otherwise to be precollation copied are automatically loaded into the RDH stacking tray one job batch at a time, or up to a preset document tray capacity, and then automatically recirculatively copied, and then automatically unloaded and ejected. RDH jobs with a number of documents exceeding the tray capacity are automatically divided, separately loaded, and separately recirculated, in sub-job sets of documents. Documents to be copied in a non-precollation copying mode are not loaded in the RDH tray and not recirculated, and automatically ejected. This reloading, selective copying, and ejecting is repeated in job batches until all preloaded documents have been copied.
