Abstract: A method for making continuous-tone, raster color images that are less susceptible to the effects of misregistration is described. For each pixel the present method determines the component-wise maximum positive color difference for the pixel from its neighbors. A fraction of this difference is then determined and then added to each pixel's color value, thus eliminating annoying white space between color transitioning in pixels. The particular fractional value is a function of the pixel's luminance.

Abstract: A liquid ink printing apparatus printing images includes a printhead (20) having a plurality of nozzles (74) wherein a single power pulse causes two or more nozzles to eject ink simultaneously. The printhead includes an ink directing element (78) having a plurality of ink conduits coupled to an array of spaced nozzles and a transducer element (77) aligned with and mated to the ink directing element. The transducers are spaced a distance apart and each transducer is substantially aligned with at least two or more of the nozzles. The printhead is stepped in a direction transverse to the array of spaced nozzles a stepping distance approximately equal to or less than the distance between transducers. The ink directing element includes a silicon wafer having etched ink conduits or channels holding ink for ejection through the nozzles connected thereto. In one embodiment, each transducer is cooperatively associated with one channel having a fork member coupled to two or more nozzles or is cooperatively associated with two or more channels wherein each channel is connected to one or more nozzles.

Dashed lines are generated for insertion into the stroke, with dashing patterns that reflect the original color of the stroke. Outlining in black or white, dependent on the stroke color, may be provided. If the stroke is wide enough, the color within the stroke may alternatively be reproduced with a black and white reproducible pattern.

Abstract: A method for color error diffusion using semi-vector quantization is proposed that simplifies error diffusion calculations. When three color separations are used, the two separations with the most visually perceptive color output are compared with one another to determine their output colors, while the third, least visually perceptive separation, is treated separately. A correction term may be applied to the third separation based on the color output of the first two separations to insure uniformity of ink coverage. This method yields results close to vector quantization and also minimizes fluctuation in the two most visually perceptive output colors. Of course, this method may be used with more than three color separations. For example, when four color separations are used, the least visually perceptive color is processed differently than the three other color separations.

Abstract: A dense black image is formed by printing the black ink in combination with at least one other ink without resulting in thick, blurred figure edges. A bitmap of binary information is provided for each of a plurality of color separations, each bitmap indicating desired locations of ink spots for a color separation. Spots are eroded on the boundaries of black image areas (12) in the bitmap to form a modified black image bitmap (14). The modified black image bitmap (14) is printed in ink of at least one color other than black at the same time that the bitmaps for the color separations other than black are printed. The original black image bitmap (12) is then printed in black ink over the printed modified black image bitmap to yield a dense black image.

Abstract: A single, split-level frame buffer (10) for use in a color imaging system includes a plurality of pixels (12) having a first resolution level. A plurality of bits are provided for each pixel so as to enable accurate pictorial imaging. The frame buffer includes pixels (14) having a resolution level which is higher than the first resolution level. Pixels on the edges of objects being imaged are replaced by the higher resolution pixels to provide images wherein object edges have high-resolution while object interiors have moderate resolution. In using a single frame buffer, images having more than one level of resolution are generated which do not require separation and merging operations.
