A filter bed F is backwashed automatically when the level of unfiltered water rises sufficiently for level monitor 13 to close filtrate outlet valve 12, whereupon siphon S 2 starts and produces suction which acts through tube 6 to start siphon S 1 , whereafter unfiltered water flows from tank 10, upwards through bed F and to waste through siphon S 2 , expanding the bed. Monitor 13 also starts a timer 9, which subsequently admits air to both siphons by opening valve 7 and stops the backwashing, opens valve 4 to discharge the first filtrate following backwashing to waste and finally closes valve 4 and opens valve 12. Tank 10 acts as a preliminary purifying stage by virtue of a sludge blanket B therein, through which water flows upwards.

Date Apr. 30, 1998A water filter arrangement (10) for trapping gross pollutants flowing in a storm water system is provided in-line or at end-of-line of a storm water pipe. The arrangement comprises an inlet (14) and an inlet area (18) which directs incoming water (16) into a filter (20). The filter traps entrained gross pollutants and filtered water exits the filter via filter outlet (50). The outlet (50) and surrounding walls (58 and 57) are shaped to create a flow of filtered water which forms a water barrier which restrains the flow of water and gross pollutants from the inlet (14) to the outlet (52). The water barrier is located between the inlet (14) and the outlet (52) preferably closer to the outlet than the inlet. As the filter (20) becomes full and the flow of filtered water exiting the filter decreases the water barrier subsides. When the filter is completely blocked, the water barrier completely subsides and the incoming water and gross pollutants by-pass the filter (20) and flow unrestrained without head loss from the inlet (14) to the outlet (52).

Abstract: The present invention provides a drum type refining or washing apparatus in which the refining or washing efficiency of a pulp suspension or a food suspension is remarkably enhanced by the filtration function of a rotary drum and by the filtrate sucking force of a filtrate receptive cell.A drum type refining or washing apparatus in which a filtrate receptive chamber 34 facing the outer peripheral surface of a rotary drum 1 which is laterally installed, is defined by a plurality of filtrate receptive cells 31 arranged in the peripheral direction of the rotary drum 1, each filtrate receptive cell 31 being provided at one end thereof on the side opposite to the rotating direction of the rotary drum 1 with a discharge port 32 for discharging the filtrate received in the filtrate receptive chamber 34 of the filtrate receptive cell 31 through the rotary drum forming wall into the liquid vessel 11, the filtrate in the filtrate receptive chamber 34 of the filtrate receptive cell 31 being discharged in the liquid vessel 11 through the discharge port 32 during an escaping process of the filtrate receptive cell 31 onto the liquid surface 17 of the liquid vessel 11 in accordance with rotation of the rotary drum 1, discharge of the filtrate causing generation of a filtrate sucking force directing toward the inside of the filtrate receptive chamber 34 at the rotary drum forming wall which the filtrate receptive chamber 34 of the filtrate receptive cell 31 faces.

Abstract: A syphon filtration system is a low head, small foot print, long operating cycle, gravity filtration system for treatment of water and wastewater, with one-stage or two-stage filtration in one vessel with different filtration media of sand, anthracite, granular activated carbon or other proprietary filtration media. The one-stage filtration system removes suspended solids or dissolved impurities and the two-stage filtration system removes suspended solids and dissolved impurities. In the two-stage filtration system, each filtration stage can be backwashed independently or both stages can be backwashed simultaneously. Novel syphon piping and controls design extend the filtration operating cycle and reduce the filter apparatus headroom, and the filter backwash water volume requirements.
