Abstract: 1,181,051. Filter bed back-washing. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 1 Jan., 1968 [7 Jan., 1967; 5 Dec., 1967], No. 13/68. Heading BID. A filter bed F is backwashed automatically when the level of unfiltered water rises sufficiently for level monitor 13 to close filtrate outlet valve 12, whereupon siphon S 2 starts and produces suction which acts through tube 6 to start siphon S 1 , whereafter unfiltered water flows from tank 10, upwards through bed F and to waste through siphon S 2 , expanding the bed. Monitor 13 also starts a timer 9, which subsequently admits air to both siphons by opening valve 7 and stops the backwashing, opens valve 4 to discharge the first filtrate following backwashing to waste and finally closes valve 4 and opens valve 12. Tank 10 acts as a preliminary purifying stage by virtue of a sludge blanket B therein, through which water flows upwards.

Abstract: 1,044,989. Gravity-separation of liquids and solids. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. Aug. 10, 1964 [Aug. 28, 1963; March 3, 1964], No. 32443/64. Heading B1D. Raw water together with dosed coagulants introduced to a trough 1 descends therefrom via conduit 4 into a perforate distribution pipe 5, falls thence on to a baffle 7 and passes over the baffle edge into a triangular coagulation zone B. Here, coagulation occurs, and the mixture flows through a longitudinal slot 8 upwards into a filtration or sludge blanket zone C where baffles 10 are provided. Excess sludge flows over the edge 11 of the left hand wall of zone C into a sedimentation zone D. Clarified water rises from zone C into a clear water zone E, whence it flows off by troughs 15 and 16. Any clarified water from the sedimentation zone D is conducted by pipes 13 to trough 15. Only one "functional element" is shown and described above. The complete clarifier consists of a number of such elements arranged side by side with a common raw water distribution system and a common clear water collecting system. Instead of being rectangular, the elements may be annular and arranged concentrically. In the rectangular assembly and in one embodiment of the circular assembly, at least one coagulation zone is common to two elements and at least one sedimentation zone is common to one of these elements and a third element. In each functional element the dimensions of the slot 8 are such that the sludge blanket is maintained fluidized without sedimentation in the filtration zone.

Abstract: 1,171,800. Filtering and settling; mixing flowing liquids. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 28 Dec., 1967 [6 Jan., 1967], No. 58785/67. Headings B1C and BID. [Also in Divisions Cl and G3] In Fig. 2a, liquid treated with a coagulating agent is supplied through a conduit 7 to zone A of a circular tank 1 and coagulated particles form a sludge blanket in a zone B. Above zone B clarified liquid C overflows into an outlet conduit 8 and sludge spilling over into a sedimentation zone D passes off through a conduit 9. The streaming potential derived from electrodes 2, 3 on each side of the sludge blanket in the direction of flow periodically controls the dosage of coagulating agent to maintain optimum conditions. Control in dependence on conductivity, rate of flow and/or concentration may be added. Applications involving a sedimentation tank or a solid filter bed with electrodes one above the other are described.

Abstract: Organically polluted liquids are fed to an aeration zone A in which an oxidizing gas stream is dissipated by a flow injector 8, the bioflocculated liquid passes through a channel 14 extending from the upper part of the bioflocculation zone A to the lower part of filtration zone B and is distributed through apertures 15 into the zone B to be filtered by an hydraulically maintained sludge blanket. Excess of the flocculent suspension is drawn off through channels 18 into concentration zone C where settled water is taken off by pipe 19 while part of the concentrate is returned to the delivery stream of water to be treated by pumps 1 and 5. Baffles 12 and 13 may be used to induce a circulatory flow in tank A. Superfluous sludge may be taken off by pipe 21.
