A process for the elimination of heavy metals, in particular mercury and possibly arsenic and lead, present in a gaseous or liquid effluent by means of a fixed bed process using an adsorbent in the form of monolithic or supported extrudates, said extrudates being characterized by a length h and a section comprising at least three lobes. The adsorbent is composed of at least one active phase based on sulphur in the elemental form or in the form of a metallic sulphide. The process is advantageously applicable to the treatment of gas of industrial origin, synthesis gas, natural gas, gas phase condensates and liquid hydrocarbon feeds.
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for reducing or eliminating undesirable air-borne substances, such as odors, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins, are provided. A filter containing nanocrystalline metal oxide or metal hydroxide particles may be installed within an air handling apparatus such as an existing HVAC unit located within a building, and particularly within a home, or a portable air processor or purifier. The air handling apparatus comprises a blower which pulls air containing various undesirable substances from within the enclosed environment and directs it through a filtering device containing the nanocrystalline particles. The undesirable substances are sorbed by the nanocrystalline particles thereby creating a deodorized stream of air that may then be directed back into various portions of the enclosed environment or vented to the atmosphere.

The methods include mixing fly ash particles with a sulfide salt and a metal salt to form a metal sulfide on the outer surface of the fly ash particles.

The present invention relates generally to an environmental control unit for use in air handling systems that provides highly effective filtration of noxious gases (such as ammonia). Such a filtration system utilizes novel metal-doped silica-based gels to trap and remove such undesirable gases from an enclosed environment. Such gels exhibit specific porosity requirements and density measurements. Furthermore, in order for proper metal doping to take effect, such gels must be treated while in a wet state. The combination of these particular properties and metal dopant permits highly effective noxious gas filtration such that uptake and breakthrough results are attained, particularly in comparison with prior silica gel filtration products. Also included is the presence of an oxidizing agent to aid in capturing nitrous oxide and preventing conversion of such a product to NO. Methods of using and specific filter apparatuses are also encompassed within this invention.

A composition comprising a metal oxide and a promoter, wherein at least a portion of the promoter is present as a reduced valence promoter, and methods of preparing such composition are disclosed. The thus-obtained composition is employed in a desulfurization zone to remove sulfur from a hydrocarbon stream.

The sorbent material is made by contacting the precursor activated carbon with a nitrogen source and a metal source, and optionally by thermally oxidizing the precursor activated carbon. The resulting doped precursor activated is also calcined.

Provided in one embodiment is a method of making an aerogel, comprising: (A) increasing a concentration of a suspension comprising a gel precursor under a condition that promotes formation of a gel, wherein the gel precursor comprises particulates having an asymmetric geometry; and (B) removing a liquid from the gel to form the aerogel, wherein the aerogel and the gel have substantially the same geometry. An aerogel comprising desirable properties are also provided.
