Abstract: In a plasma display panel, data electrodes (12) are formed parallel to each other on a first substrate (11), and a selection voltage is to be applied to them. A dielectric layer (13) covers a surface of the first substrate (11) to include the data electrodes (12). Linear partitions (30) are formed at a predetermined interval on the first substrate (11) to be parallel to the data electrodes (12). A second substrate opposes the first substrate (11). A closed space between the first and second substrates is filled with a gas. A pair of sustain discharge electrodes are formed on the second substrate to intersect the data electrodes (12), and a discharge voltage is to be applied across them. Intersections of the pair of sustain discharge electrodes and data electrodes (12) form matrix-like discharge cells (100). Stepped partitions (20) are formed at a predetermined interval on the first substrate (11) in a direction intersecting the linear partitions (30), and have heights smaller than those of the linear partitions (30). Notched openings (301) are formed in the linear partitions (30) at intersections of the linear and stepped partitions. A method of manufacturing a plasma display panel is also disclosed.

Abstract: The disclosure provides a plasma display panel and manufacturing method thereof to simplify the manufacturing steps and reduce cost of production. A black layer (11c) formed between a transparent electrode (11a) and a bus electrode (11b) is formed together with a black matrix at the same time. In this case, the black layer is formed together with the black matrix in one. Cheap nonconductive oxide is used as a black powder of a black layer. Specifically, in case the black layer and the black matrix are formed in one, the bus electrode is shifted to a non-discharge area to improve the brightness of the plasma display panel.

Abstract: The first object of the present invention is to provide a PDP with improved panel brightness which is achieved by improving the efficiency in conversion from discharge energy to visible rays. The second object of the present invention is to provide a PDP with improved panel life which is achieved by improving the protecting layer protecting the dielectrics glass layer. To achieve the first object, the present invention sets the amount of xenon in the discharge gas to the range of 10% by volume to less than 100% by volume, and sets the charging pressure for the discharge gas to the range of 500 to 760Torr which is higher than conventional charging pressures. With such construction, the panel brightness increases. Also, to achieve the second object, the present invention has, on the surface of the dielectrics glass layer, a protecting layer consisting of an alkaline earth oxide with (100)-face or (110)-face orientation. The protecting layer, which may be formed by using thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method, plasma enhanced CVD method, or a vapor deposition method with irradiation of ion or electron beam, will have a high sputtering resistance and effectively protect the dielectrics glass layer. Such a protecting layer contributes to the improvement of the panel life.
