Abstract: 447,723. Discharge apparatus; valve modulating circuits. SOC. FRANCAISE RADIO - ELECTRIQUE, 79, Boulevard Haussmann, Paris. Oct. 8, 1935, No. 27804. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1934. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A discharge device wherein control of the space current is obtained by mechanical displacement of one of the electrodes of the device, comprises means for concentrating a stream of charged corpuscles such as electrons, constituting the space current, at a point or points or regions where the movable electrode is located. The concentrating means may be magnetic or electrostatic. In the form shown in Fig. 2, electrons from the cathode C are concentrated by the field of a positively charged grid G, at points I in the plane M of a movable grid electrode, preferably of like pitch to Gl. The grid Gl may be replaced by a system of grids, and a further set of grids may be interposed between the plane M and the anode P. The movable electrode may have a constant positive or negative potential, and may act as the anode, or an alternating voltage applied to it may be modulated by the movement, to appear in a tuned output circuit in amplified form. In a modification, a beam of electrons from a cathode C is concentrated magnetically by a coil B onto a movable electrode I, such as a fine wire, the controlled current passing to the output electrode A.

Abstract: 432,350. Converting. STETTLER, O., 102, Giesshubelstrasse, Z³rich, Switzerland. Dec. 21, 1933, No. 36020. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 22, 1934.] [Class 38 (ii)] [See also Groups XL and XXXVIII] An electric discharge tube for conversion purposes has an anode, a cathode and a screen located so closely adjacent the current-emitting surface of the cathode or the current-receiving surface of the anode, that any part of the surface covered by the screen does not contribute to the discharge which takes place between the uncovered portion of surface and the other electrode, the arrangement being such that either the screen is movable relatively to the active anode or cathode surface, or the anode or cathode is movable relatively to a stationary screen, so as to influence the magnitude of the discharge currents. In an example, Fig. 5 (not shown), a tube having two enclosed anodes has a screening member on a spring strip which is arranged to uncover the anodes alternately when vibrated by an electromagnet within the tube supplied with an alternating current. If the screen is vibrated by a source of constant frequency it acts as a commutator, and the device can be used to convert direct into alternating current ; if the current produced is fed back to the control magnet, it becomes an inverter producing alternating current at the natural frequency of the spring. The same device may be used as a rectifier. In a modification, Fig. 6, for converting direct into threephase alternating current the movable member 17 is a cylinder having two compartments and supported on a pivot 21. A magnetic armature 18 secured to the member 17 is rotated by a rotating magnetic field produced by the winding 19. The upper compartment 17 has a quarter of its circumference cut away and contains an anode 22 of graphite. The lower compartment 17b has a slot similar but diametrically opposite to that in 17 and contains an indirectly heated cathode 23. Arranged symmetrically around the movable screen are three members each comprising a cathode 26 directly above an anode 27 and electrically connected thereto, each pair being connected to an apex of a delta-connected three-phase load. The direct current source is connected between the anode 22 and the cathode 23, and when the screen rotates the direct current source is switched across each arm of the load in such a manner as to produce a three phase current. By suitably shaping the slots in the screen any desired wave form may be obtained. The windings 19 may be fed from a separate source of controlled frequency which may be a tube according to the invention, or from the mains being supplied, if these are already under voltage.

Abstract: 385,968. Discharge apparatus. HARRIES, J. H. O., Shirley, Old Road, Frinton-on-Sea. April 2, 1931, No. 10017. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v).] A discharge tube of the kind described in Specification 380,429 is provided with means, such as one or more control grids, having a substantial effect on the stream of electrons; or the effect may be produced magnetically or by means of one or more of the accelerating or decelerating electrodes. In the valve shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, two accelerating electrodes 2, 4 and a decelerating electrode 3, are mounted between a filament cathode 7 and an adjustable anode 5. The control grid 6 consists of a mesh 8, Fig. 3, and has partitions 10 forming compartments 9 in which V-shaped sections of the cathode, Fig: 2, are mounted, the partitions acting as means for focussing the electron stream. The electrodes 2, 4 consist of a wire mesh on a wire frame, and the decelerating electrode 3 consists of a wire mesh stretched across a metal plate. The wires of the meshes of adjacent electrodes are at right angles. Dimensions of the spacing of the electrodes and of the pitches of the wires of the meshes are given, for example, for producing a valve with a very low capacity between the anode and control grid. In the valve shown in Figs. 8 and 8a two anodes 5 are supported from the top of the envelope. The filament cathode 7 is arranged within the control grid 6, and the accelerating electrodes 2, 4 and decelerating electrode 3 are mounted between the control grid and the anodes. The top and sides of the plate portions of the electrode 3 are closed over so as to form a screen enclosing the elecprodes 2, 6, 7. The arrangement may be such that not more than 0.2 of the electron stream passes to the intermediate electrodes. A tubular assembly of concentric electrodes may be used in a valve of the split anode or magnetron type, and the cathode may be of the unipotential type. The valve may be used as a short-wave generator or with any of the circuits described in Specification 380,429, and a record modulator, as described in Specification 328,680, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.], may be used. In the high-frequency amplification or generating circuit shown in Fig. 10, the input circuit L , C is connected between a negatively-biased control grid 6 and the filament 7, the decelerating or " stopping " electrode 3 is connected with the filament, and the accelerating electrode 2 is maintained at the potential of the anode 5. The potential of the accelerating electrode 4 may be the same as that of the anode, or it may be slightly less in order to prevent loss of saturation when the instantaneous potential of the anode is less than that of the electrode 4 owing to the fall of potential across the output circuit L , C2. The electrodes 2, 3, 4 may be connected together to act as a single accelerating electrode. The arrangement may be used as a generator by coupling the inductances L , L .

Abstract: 239,980. Price, S. L. March 21, 1924. Vacuum tubes.-A valve has two or more filaments and a plate arranged so that the plate and filaments are adjustable; a control grid may be adjustable by gravity-controlled means within the bulb. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, four filaments 5 - - 5 are mounted on spokes on discs 6, 7 separated by an insulating disc 8, each filament extending from a spoke on one disc to a spoke on the other disc. The discs are mounted on an axle 10, and may be adjusted to bring a filament into position inside the plate 3 by rotating the bulb, so that a ball 12, engaging with a stop 14 in a dished plate 13, causes rotation of the discs and filament. A brush 11 bears against contacts on the disc 6 to make connection with any filament. In a modification, looped filaments extend radially from discs, and the plate is of U-section or formed of two curved parts separated by gaps. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 11 the filaments 5 extend between two discs 17, 18 on a spindle carrying a ratchet 21 operated through a pawl 23 by a pendulum 24, the plate, not shown, consisting of two curved parts. In a further arrangement a plate mounted on wires is adjusted in position relatively to two straight filaments, for instance by shaking the bulb. A control grid may be provided. According to the Provisional Specification a part of the plate may be adjustable.

Abstract: An adjusting device for the pretensioning force of a spring has an adjusting piece (30) with two pairs of projections (31, 32), which are arranged diametrically opposite one another and extend in the direction of the spring force, and whose length is different. The adjusting piece (30) can rotate with respect to a latching piece (40) which has a sequence of recesses or indentations (41, 42, 43, 44) which are of different depth and are used for holding the projections (31, 32). The projections and the recesses are dimensioned in such a manner and are arranged in such a distribution that a symmetrical and central transmission of the spring force is ensured in all relative positions of the adjusting piece and of the latching piece. The described adjusting device is generally suitable for mechanical and electrical apparatuses, and is explained in conjunction with a vacuum contactor.
