Abstract:
Matting agent for thermally curable systems, especially for powder coating compositions, that comprise at least one carboxyl-containing polymer as binder and at least one epoxy-group-containing compound as cross-linking agent, wherein the matting agent comprises at least the following constituents: (a) a metal salt or a metal complex of an organic compound, the metal being selected from the group magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, aluminium, tin and antimony, and (b) a polymerisation product of monomers, the monomers including epoxy-group-containing monomers and the epoxy value of the polymerisation product being from 0.1 to 8 equivalents of epoxy groups, and overall the ratio of epoxy equivalents of component (b) to metal equivalents of component (a) being from 0.2 to 120.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a powder paint binder composition which contains a compound comprising carboxylic acid units, a compound comprising hydroxyalkyl amide units and as catalyst phosphinic acid, a (C1-C26) alkylphosphinic acid, a C6-C20) arylphosphinic acid or an ester or an anhydride derived from one of these acids. Highly suitable as catalyst for this reaction are phosphinic acid, phenylphosphinic acid and diylphosphine ester acid.
Abstract:
Aqueous coating composition, for example for use as a clear or pigmented top coat or a primer, comprising: a) a polyol or a mixture of polyols having: i) a content of carboxylate- and/or carboxylic acid-functional groups C and ii) a content of sulfonate- and/or sulfonic acid-functional groups S, the total content C + S being between 0,09 and 0,6 mmol/gram polyol and the ratio C/S having a value between 0,5 to 20; b) one or more cross-linkers, such as a polyisocyanate. More than 50 % of the sulfonic acid groups and the carboxylic acid groups are neutralized with amines. Polyol having a content C of carboxylate- and/or carboxylic acid-functional groups and a content S of sulfonate- and/or sulfonic acid-functional groups, the total content C + S being between 0,09 and 0,6 mmol/gram polyol, and the ratio C/S having a value between 0,5 to 20. Process for preparing a polyol resin, comprising the following steps: polymerizing a mixture of hydroxy-functional, olefinically unsaturated monomers without acid-functional groups and without carboxylate- or sulfonate-functional groups in a solvent-borne solution to obtain a hydrophobic polyol; adding to the mixture, after a portion of the monomer mixture has polymerized, a mixture of said monomers with olefinically unsaturated monomers having hxdroxy groups, carboxylic acid and/or carboxylate groups and/or sulfonic acid and/or sulfonate groups to obtain a hydrophilic polyol; evaporating the solvent; dispersing the polyol in a mixture of water and amines.
Abstract:
A thermosetting composition comprising a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of (a) beta-hydroxyalkylamide cross-linking agent, e.g., bis(N,N-di-2-hydroxyethyl)adipamide, and (b) polycarboxylic acid functional polymer, is described. The polycarboxylic acid functional polymer is prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization and has well defined polymer chain architecture and polydispersity index of less than 2.5. The thermosetting compositions of the present invention have utility as powder coatings compositions.
Abstract:
A process for preparing an encapsulated particulate solid using an epoxy functional cross-linking agent and a carboxylic acid functional dispersant wherein the cross-linking agent has one or more oligomeric dispersing group and/or the dispersant has an acid value of at least 125 mg KOH/g. The resultant solids are useful in, for example, ink jet printing inks.
Abstract:
Adhesive tapes (e.g., duct tapes) having a backing comprising a compatibilized release composition are reported. The compatibilized release composition comprises a thermoplastic olefin- based polymer comprising an acid or a base functionality and a polymeric release material comprising an acid or a base functionality. The functionality of the thermoplastic olefin-based polymer and the functionality of the polymeric release material provide an acid-base interaction that compatibilizes the release composition.
