Abstract:
A hard to simulate, readily distinguishable from counterfeits, optical interference authenticating device comprises a substrate, and two optical interference coatings in interfacial contact on one side of the substrate, one of the optical interference coatings being a contrast coating, the other of the optical interference coatings being a form depicting coating for depicting a form relative to the contrast coating. The optical interference coatings each comprising at least one optical interference layer the material and thickness of which has been selected for the coatings to have different, particular, known spectral reflectance and spectral transmittance characteristics from one another when viewed at a particular angle, such that the form depicting coating is visible by reflected or transmitted light of particular coloration, when viewed at the particular angle, at least in part by optical interference of light partically reflected or transmitted at the interfacial contact. A further optical interference contrast coating may be provided on the substrate and the form depicting coating may be sandwiched between the contrast coatings. The substrate may be transparent, semi-transparent or opaque, depending how the spectral characteristics are to be observed. A marginal edge portion of the form depicting coating may taper in thickness to provide a multicolored auriole around the form. A plurality form depicting coatings may be provided which overlie one another to provide a more complex pattern.
Abstract:
A breakwater comprised of an array of aligned perforated-wall (20,21) caissons (10) having a slab bottom (17) standing on a pervious rubble base (13) and anchored by its own weight incorporates exceptionally heavy ballasting (31) to ensure stability under attack by large waves, i.e. so that the ratio of maximum horizontal thrust force to net downward vertical force is below about 0.46. The immersed wall height is much reduced so that the slab bottom lies below mean sea level about 1.3 to 1.7 times the height of the greatest wave predicted, lessening costs of construction and siting. Efficient energy dissipation function is preserved by placement of augmenting mass below the height of the wave trough and by providing flow passages for jets directed by front wall ducts, avoiding increase of reflection coefficient. The mass may be a pervious rubble store, or a lower-grade concrete cast about horizontal duct pipes extending into or wholly through the chamber, or may be metal slabs supported on racks, or may be apertured fairing bodies carried on the front wall. Double-sided breakwaters on coasts where wave incidence occurs only at high tides incorporate a large proportion of ballast mass; when oriented as groins to protect a river mouth, the porting of an intermediate wall allows sands to migrate freely through without accretion. The rubble base comprises a core of gravel capped by larger rubble.
Abstract:
A method of converting a feed solid polycrystalline of alumina into a hydronium conductor requires the preselection of an appropriate feed ceramic preferably with a chemical forumula; and with a t(S) of 0.37 ± 0.03 wherein The crystallographic lattice is altered by placing the solid feed ceramic in an ionic solution or melt containing two or more ionic species of different ionic radii; the composition of the melt or solution being written: M,, M 2 (M 3 ...) X where M, and M 2 (and M 3 etc.) are ions of dissimilar size and as examples sodium, potassium, lithium and hydronium ions. After a time the material is removed, washed and subjected to a field effect exchange whereby the desired hydronium conducting solid ceramic having the following chemical composition is achieved; where (a) (b) (c) = 0→I and a + b + c = I and Z is a stabilizer of the β" phase.
Abstract:
There is disclosed a new process for the conversion of the organic components of sludge, particularly sewage sludge, to produce useful, storable, energy-containing oil products, apparatus for carrying out the process and a control process for optimisation of the process temperature. The sludge preferably is mechanically dewatered to about 20-25% solids by weight and thermally dried to about 90% solids by weight. The resultant material is comminuted and heated in the apparatus of the invention to at least 250°C in a heating zone in the absence of oxygen to generate a gaseous atmosphere containing volatiles; this atmosphere is then removed, scrubbed of H 2 S and NH 3 if required, and passed preferably in countercurrent flow in a heated reaction zone in intimate contact with the «devolatilized» sludge solids from the heating zone, again in the absence of oxygen, at a temperature of at least 280°C, resulting in catalysed vapour phase oii-producing reactions. The oil vapours are carried out by the gas flow and condensed. The preferred apparatus moves the sludge solids cocurrent with the heating zone atmosphere and countercurrent with the reaction zone atmosphere. In the reaction zone the conveyor not only moves the comminuted sludge along but lifts it and drops it through the gaseous atmosphere for the preferred intimate contact. Preferably the sludge is examined repeatedly by differential scanning calorimetry to generate a thermogram which has been found to reveal immediately the optimum temperature for operation of the reaction zone, and also the anticipated oil yield from the sludge.
Abstract:
A hard to simulate, readily distinguishable from counterfeits, optical interference authenticating device comprises a substrate, and at least one optical interference, form depicting coating on the substrate and partially covering the substrate to delineate a known, distinct and readily distinguishable form thereon. The said at least one optical interference coating comprises at least one optical interference layer having known spectral reflectance and spectral transmittance characteristics when viewed at at least one particular angle so that the form is visible in particular colouration at the or each said particular angle of incidence of light thereon by reflected or transmitted light. At least one other optical interference coating may be provided on the substrate and may completely cover one side of it and the substrate may be transparent, semi-transparent or opaque, depending how the spectral characteristics are to be observed. A marginal edge portion of the form depicting coating may taper in thickness to provide a multi-coloured auriole around the form. When a plurality of form depicting coatings are provided they may partially overlie one another to provide a more complex pattern.
