Abstract: A hard to simulate, readily distinguishable from counterfeits, optical interference authenticating device comprises a substrate, and at least one optical interference, form depicting coating on the substrate and partially covering the substrate to delineate a known, distinct and readily distinguishable form thereon. The said at least one optical interference coating comprises at least one optical interference layer having known spectral reflectance and spectral transmittance characteristics when viewed at at least one particular angle so that the form is visible in particular colouration at the or each said particular angle of incidence of light thereon by reflected or transmitted light. At least one other optical interference coating may be provided on the substrate and may completely cover one side of it and the substrate may be transparent, semi-transparent or opaque, depending how the spectral characteristics are to be observed. A marginal edge portion of the form depicting coating may taper in thickness to provide a multi-coloured auriole around the form. When a plurality of form depicting coatings are provided they may partially overlie one another to provide a more complex pattern.

Abstract: A thin film optical filter having a bandpass reflectance characteristic with one otthe transition wavelength edges thereof being non-polarizing for radiation incident at a preselected non-normalangle. The filter comprises a transparent substrate and a multilayer thin film optical coating provided on one surface thereof. The optical coating includes a preselected number of alternate layers of a first higher refractive index dielectric material and a second lower refractive index dielectric material arranged as a sequence of dielectric multilayer stacks with intervening spacer layers formed of one of the dielectric materials. The optical thickness of the spacer layers is detuned from half-wave optical thickness to shift either the low wavelength transition edges (Figure 10B) or the high wavelength transition edges (Figure 10A) for the separate bandpass response characteristics for the two principal polarization planes substantially into alignment with each other. Various other dielectric stack designs utilizing detuned layers to accomplish the same alignment of wavelength transition edges are described. Simplex and duplex fiber optic communication systems utilizing non-polarizing edge filters of the thin film type are also disclosed.

Abstract: A multi layer interference coating comprising at least one multi layer stack deposited on a reflective layer (9), wherein each multi layer stack comprises a first dielectric layer (11), a layer of absorbing material (10) and a second layer of dielectric material (11) arranged in series and having a reflectance spectrum in the infrared region comprising at least one maximum. The dielectric layers are of equal optical thickness and typically are of the same material. The multi layer structure of the coating is such that incident electromagnetic radiation, for which odd multiples of half wavelengths correspond to the optical thickness of the multi layer coating at the incident wavelength do not propagate within the coating and reflection at these wavelengths, is suppressed. Coatings may therefore be designed to have a near satured colour in the visible wavelength spectrum. The reflective layer may be a metal or a conducting oxide, a conducting nitride, a conducting silicide or a conducting sulphide. The absorbing layers may be Cr, V, Pd, Ni, Pt, conducting oxides, or substoichiometric metal oxides, such as TiOx. In one form of the coating, where a non-metal absorber is used, the second dielectric layer may be removed in at least one of the multi layer stacks. The coating may be incorporated in a system for verifying the authenticity of an article.
