N-[(1,3,5-triazine-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]benzensulphonamides having the formula (I), wherein R1 represents a methyl or ethyl group, R2 represents a halogen atom, an alkyl sulphonyl group with from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, a trifluoromethyl group or a 2-methoxyethoxygroup, R represents a hydrogen atom, a methyl, ethyl, methoxy and ethoxy group, a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom and R4 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, their agriculturally compatible salts, a method of preparation thereof and use thereof.

Salicyloyl(thio)ether derivatives of the formula I, where X is oxygen or sulfur and Z is carbon or nitrogen, and the radicals R1 to R4 and A have the meanings given in the disclosure, and processes form preparing the same. These derivatives have improved herbicidal properties or other properties desirable in crop protection, such as growth-regulating or fungicidal activity.

A process is disclosed for controlling undesirable plant growth and for regulating plant growth, by applying to the plants derivatives of azaanthraquinones and/or azaxanthones having formula (I), in which X, Y, Z and the residues R to R have the following meanings: R is hydrogen, methyl; R -R are (a) hydrogen, (b) halogen, (c) nitro, (d) COOR , in which R stands for C1-C4-alkyl, (e) CONH2 and CONR R , in which R and R stand for C1-C4-alkyl, (f) C1-C8-alkyl, which may bear one to three of the following substituents: halogen, hydroxy, C1-C6-alkoxy, (g) C3-C6-alkenyl, (h) C1-C4-alkoxy, (i) hydroxy, (j) amino or NR R , (k) phenyl, which may bear one to five halogen atoms or one to three of the following substituents: nitro, C1-C4-alkoxy, C1-C4-alkyl or C1-C4alkyl halide; X, Y are N, N -O or CH, with the proviso that only a nitrogen atom or a N-oxide group be contained in the ring; Z is oxygen, sulphur or a C = O group; A is oxygen or sulphur. Also disclosed are new azaanthraquinones and azaxanthones and herbicidal and bioregulatory agents containing the same.
