    Abstract: The invention relates to flow control in data transmission in telecommunications systems, particularly in wireless telecommunications systems. In the present invention flow control information is tunnelled over a connection leg (Iu) which does not support flow control on a lower transmission protocol layer (ATM) underlying a user level (LAC). The nodes (RNC, 3G MSC) at the both ends of the leg (Iu) are arranged to use the flow control information to control the data flow on the lower transmission protocol level (ATM) of the leg. In other words, the transmission of new data on the lower transmission protocol level (ATM) is ceased or the dat a rate decreased when the flow control information activates the flow control in the transmitting node, and similarly, the transmission o f new data on the lower transmission protocol level (ATM) is restarted or the data rate increased when the conveyed flow control information deactivates the flow control. The need of flow control may be recognized from the receiving buffer status on the lower transmission protocol level or from incoming flow control information received over the following leg of the connection in the downlink direction.

    Abstract: A method and a GGSN support node for sending data packets to a mobile statio n (MS) in a mobile communications system (13) from an external communication system (11, 12). The GGSN receives data packe ts from the external communication system (11, 12) in a first plurality of data flows which it maps to a second plurality of data flows in the mobile communications system (13). It establishes at least one filter (FI) for controlling the mapping and associates the filter (FI) with the mobile station. It also maps at least one of the data flows on the basis of the filter (FI) and configures the filter (FI) on the basis of information (6-1, 7-1) which preferably originates from the mobile station (MS).

    Abstract: In connection-oriented switching of packet data in known mobile communications systems, resources of the transmission path between the serving node (SGSN) and the radio network subsystem (RNS) and memory resources of the radio network subsystem are reserved unnecessarily due to the burst-like nature of packet data. Thus the transmission network's limited address space and the radio network subsystem's management resources are consumed. The invention concerns such connection management in a mobile communications system, which is suitable for packet-switched data transmission. The method according to the invention is characterized in that the logical connection between the serving node (SGSN) and the radio network subsystem (RNS) is released, so that the logical connection between the serving node (SGSN) and the mobile station (MS) remains, and the released logical connection is reconnected, when relaying of user data starts.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a telecommunication network and a routing method, wherein user data are routed via an access network (2) to a gateway device (5) of a core network (7) connected to the access network (2) via a first interface. The control of the gateway device (5) is performed by supplying a control information from the core network (7) to the gateway device (5) via a second interface, and the user data are routed directly between the access network (2) and the gateway device (5) via the first interface. Thus, the user data are routed directly from the access network ( 2) to the gateway (5), whereas the control can be performed via a dedicated and open control interface. Thereby, the processing resources can be shared between several applications and trunking gains can be utilized. Furthermore , real-time transport capabilities can be provided by a simple method of connecting the Internet to the mobile network.
