Abstract:
A video inspection system which accomplishes its bit-mapped graphical information is compressed by converting it to a format within the frequency domain (30). Compressed data is analyzed against data in a database to determine acceptability of the specimen (32). Specimens for which an acceptability determination is not completed by this comparison are subject to a more conventional analysis of the bit-mapped data corresponding to the earlier analyzed compressed data (32). This system is applied both to discrete specimen analysis as well as continuous specimen analysis such as occurs in web inspections.
Abstract:
An automated inspection technology is integrated with a cylindrical container print decorator machine, optimizing the decoration process by making critical process and machine information properly and immediately available, facilitating corrective adjustments to the process. A high speed decoration machine operator will be made directly aware of the specific portions or subsystems of the decorator machine which are not functioning properly. The information facilitates the corrective adjustments necessary to the decorator to better optimize its printing functions. It is possible to use this information by way of a properly configured control system and, after specific augmentation capabilities are added to the decorator machine, to automatically close the loops with specific parts or subsystems of the decorator printing machine to dramatically improve the decorating process even while the machine is actively printing.
Abstract:
A method and/or system for forming a plastic bottle from a preform without the use of a mold or a complete mold are provided. The technique includes selectively injecting heat into the preform using narrowband irradiation devices emitting irradiation in a narrow wavelength band matching desired absorptive characteristics of selective portions of the preform according to a predetermined heat signature to achieve a three- dimensional heat profile in the preform. The heat profile corresponds to a desired shape of a finished bottle and facilitates self-limiting stretching of the selected portions of the preform to achieve the desired shape. Using the technique, air is selectively injected into the preform to form in free air the finished bottle having the desired shape.
Abstract:
A system for direct injection of selected thermal-infrared (IR) wavelength radiation or energy into food items for a wide range of processing purposes is provided. These purposes may include heating, raising or maintaining the temperature of the food articles. The system is especially applicable to operations that require or benefit from the ability to irradiate at specifically selected wavelengths or to pulse or inject the radiation. The system is particularly advantageous when functioning at higher speeds and in a non-contact environment with the target.
Abstract:
A system for direct injection of selected, narrow bandwidth thermal- infrared (IR) radiation or energy into articles for a wide range of processing purposes is provided. The irradiation wavelengths are selected according to the specific absorption band characteristics of the target entity to create the desired efficiency of thermal transfer. The applications of the invention may include heating, raising or maintaining the temperature of articles, or stimulating a target item in a range of different industrial, medical, consumer, or commercial circumstances. The system is especially applicable to operations that require or benefit from the ability to irradiate at specifically selected mid-infrared wavelengths or to pulse or inject the radiation. The system is particularly advantageous when functioning at higher speeds and in a non-contact environment with the target.
Abstract:
A filling apparatus and method including a carrier for transporting containers and having a plurality of valves, each of the valves being opened for an individual, specific period of time to control a flow of liquid into the respective containers, while the containers are transported by the carrier. An exit feed path transports the containers after the containers have been filled, and a sensor, such as a camera, detects a level of liquid in the respective containers, while the containers are on the exit feed path. The sensor produces a signal that is stored as data representing the level of liquid for the individual containers. The data is then tracked and used for valve optimization. A period of time that each individual valve is opened for subsequent fillings is adjusted based on the signal and the historical performance of each valve.
Abstract:
This application relates to an apparatus and method for providing patterned illumination fields for use within process control and article inspection applications. More specifically, it pertains to the use of patterned illuminators to enable visual surface inspection of polished objects such as ball bearings. The use of patterned illuminators properly disposed in relation to a polished part under inspection allows small surface imperfections such as scratches and pits to become visible against the normal surface background. The use of carefully engineered illuminators facilitates advantageous defect-site scattering from generally dark field sources. The patterned nature of the illuminators defined by this invention allows the complete surface of three-dimensional parts to be effectively highlighted using dark field illumination fields.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a method and apparatus for mass and/or volume measurements of manufactured articles. More particularly, this invention relates to a method and apparatus for mass and/or volume measurements that can be performed on-line in a part manufacturing process. On-line measurement of the mass or volume of material contained in a specific region of interest of the manufactured items is performed 100% on-line. Real-time process control information is based on real-time measurement of the mass or volume of material contained in a specific region of interest of a manufactured item. Automated quality control inspection for manufactured articles is based on realtime measurement of the mass or volume of material contained in a specific region of interest of manufactured items. A manufacturing closed-loop process is directly corrected to keep it within control limits based on real-time measurement of the mass or volume of material contained in a specific region of interest of manufactured items soon after these items are manufactured.
Abstract:
A solid-state lighting unit for automated visual inspection includes a high-density array of light emitting diodes (12). The packaging density of said diode array being limited only by the physical size of the light emitting diode chips and the ability to perform die and wire bond operations on the bare chips. Each diode is disposed on an electrically insulated, thermally conductive base unit (10). The base unit is, in turn, in a thermally conductive path with a heat dissipator (30). The provisons made to ensure a thermally conductive path from the individual light emitting diode chips to the heat dissipator combined with the high chip packing densities work together to create a solid-state lighting array capable of producing extremely high illumination fields when operated in either pulsed or continuous current mode.
Abstract:
A substantially isotropic illumination source (B) utilizes a generally spherical, translucent diffuser (26). The spherical diffuser has an inner wall and a diffusive outer wall. Light is communicated inwardly to the sphere along a first hemisphere. Light is diffused and homogenized by internal reflection within the sphere and communicated outwardly through a complementary hemisphere. This light, upon being diffused by the external or outer wall is substantially isotropic. The isotropic light so generated is utilized for video inspection of translucent specimens (10) with improved contrast to facilitate detection (14) of flaws therein. Another aspect utilizes a specimen itself as the isotropic diffuser.
