    Abstract: A color display system (9) includes a cathode-ray tube (10) and yoke (30). The yoke is a self-converging type that produces an astigmatic magnetic deflection field within the tube. The cathode-ray tube has an electron gun (26) for generating and directing three electron beams (28) along paths toward a screen (22) of the tube. The electron gun includes electrodes (34,36,38,40) that comprise a beam-forming region and electrodes (44,46) that form a main focusing lens, and features electrodes (42,44) for forming a multipole lens between the beam-forming region and the main focusing lens in each of the electron beam paths. Each multipole lens is oriented to provide a correction to an associated electron beam to at least partially compensate for the effect of the astigmatic magnetic field on the associated beam. There are two multipole lens electrodes. A second of the two multipole lens electrodes (44) is connected to and combined with a main focusing lens electrode (44), and a first of the two multipole lens electrodes (42) is located between the second multipole lens electrode and the beam-forming region and faces the second multipole lens electrode.

    Abstract: A feedback stabilized differential signal amplifier exhibiting relatively good linearity which avoids the need for a signal bypass capacitor in the feedback circuit. Feedback is provided by means of a current repeater direct current coupled between an output terminal and the emitters of a pair of differentially coupled amplifier transistors. Bias current is provided to the amplifier transistors by a separate current control transistor. High frequency rolloff is determined by a capacitor coupled to one of the amplifier transistors in a Miller feedback arrangement. The circuit is suitable for construction in monolithic integrated circuit form.

In an automatic gain control arrangement, signals are fed from terminal 53 to the base of amplifier transistor 12 via emitter-follower 14, series resistor 30 and Darlington connected pair 16, 18. Transistor 12 forms with transistor 10 a cascode I.F. amplifier to which an automatic gain control potential is applied via terminal 67. At low signal levels a further transistor 28 is biased into saturation from the D.C. potential drop across resistor 24, and in turn biases transistor 26 non-conductive. When a predetermined signal level is reached the D.C. bias on transistor 28 is reduced, so that this transistor comes out of saturation. The resulting bias on transistor 26 renders this transistor conductive, and for this and higher signal levels the transistors 28, 26, 16, 18, 12 form a D.C. feedback loop tending to maintain the bias on transistor 12 constant. The transistor 26 also forms with resistor 30 a variable attenuator whereby the output signal level from the amplifier is maintained constant.

    Abstract: 1527750 Cathode-ray tubes RCA CORPORATION 31 Dec 1975 [7 Jan 1975] 53289/75 Heading H1D A cathode-ray tube deflection yoke mount comprises a first portion 31, Fig. 7, in which the yoke is mounted and a second portion 30, Fig. 6, which is secured to the tube envelope, wherein a spring arrangement adjustably connects the two portions together, and provides the sole support therebetween, in such a manner as to permit independent adjustment of the yoke with respect to the tube envelope about two perpendicular axes. As shown, the mount portion 31 comprises a central ring 54 having lugs 56 for the snap-on attachment of a yoke and four circumferentially spaced bow springs 46, 48, 50 and 52, Fig. 2, each having an externally formed bracket 62 with a slot 65 to receive respective split projections 42 of the mount platform 30. Apertures 66 in the brackets 62 and slots 44 in the projections 42 permit insertion of nuts and bolts 72, 68 to secure the two portions together. By loosening one opposite pair of nuts and bolts, with the other pair tightened, respective independent horizontal or vertical adjustment of the yoke alignment may be effected. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 19-23 (not shown), the bow springs are replaced by cantilever springs. In other embodiments disclosed the spring arrangement is provided on the platform mount secured to the tube and the co-operating projections are provided on the yoke support portion. The yoke mount is preferably formed of plastics material, and when the yoke is finally aligned the mount portions 30, 31 may subsequently be permanently fixed together by glue or by ultrasonic welding.

[Also in Division H2] In a deflection and EHT generating circuit for a TV receiver current is supplied from a voltage source B + via a variable reactance 75 to an energy storage capacitor 35 during a trace portion of each deflection cycle and a semiconductor switch 39 couples said energy storage capacitor 35 to deflection coils 33 during at least a retrace portion of each deflection cycle and includes means for varying the reactance 75 in response to variations in EHT so as to maintain image size substantially constant. As shown, horizontal deflection coil 33 is supplied with deflection current from a circuit of the type described in Specification 1,260,375 but in which thyristor 27 is connected to a tapping on the primary winding 53a of a transformer so as to compensate for the difference in voltage across diode 29 and thyristor 27 when conducting. The exchange of energy between the E.H.T. transformer 53 and the deflection circuit is so arranged that variation of beam current in the cathode-ray tube 13 will result in a variation in deflection amplitude and a change in E.H.T. voltage. If the ratio of the change of deflection current to that of the E.H.T. voltage is between one half and one, then the image width tends to remain constant despite variation in beam current. The image width is further stabilized against variation in supply voltage by comparing the voltage across capacitor 31 with that of a Zener diode 71 and amplifying the result by means of a transistor 73 which controls a saturable inductor 75 so as to vary the inductance across winding 47 and hence compensate both for change in deflection amplitude and in E.H.T. voltage. The Zener diode 71 may be connected in the emitter circuit of transistor 73 or omitted.

    Abstract: In a video disc system for recovering recorded signals from a video disc by a stylus by establishing relative motion between the disc and the stylus, a speed correction system is provided. A low frequency error correction system is employed to maintain the average speed of the disc at a predetermined speed. A high frequency error correction system is used to compensate for the deviation of the instantaneous relative speed between the disc and the stylus from the average speed of the disc. Means responsive to the presence of recorded signals in the output of the stylus are provided for enabling the low frequency error correction system. Means are provided for delaying the operation of the high frequency error correction system relative to enabling of the low frequency error correction system, permitting stabilization of the high frequency error correction system response and adjustment of the average speed of the disc to the predetermined speed, to precede operation of the high frequency error correction system.

    Abstract: 1296114 Colour television receiver RCA CORPORATION 8 May 1970 [8 May 1969] 22309/70 Heading H4F An automatic chroma control circuit for a colour television receiver comprises an oscillator whose output amplitude is instantaneously dependent upon the received burst signal amplitude including any noise components within the burst signal interval of the received signal, this output being passed via a peak detector to derive a control voltage proportional to the highest peak of the oscillator which is used to control the gain of the chroma amplifier stage of the receiver. The oscillator includes a filter network which provides A.C. feedback to the oscillator, the received burst signal and noise components within the filter network passband locking the oscillator in phase and frequency to the burst signal, the magnitude of its output varying accordance with the magnitude of the filtered signal components. By taking account of the noise components an improved display is obtained over that of the prior art in which an average detector is used for ACC control so that the output control voltage is independent of noise, and the displayed image is thus affected by the undesired noise components. Excessive noise conditions will reduce the chroma gain and consequently protect colour filler operation, i.e. large noise signal amplitudes during a monochrome transmission will not enable the chroma channel since the ACC circuit reduces the chroma gain. The overall action of the ACC circuit provides the viewer with a colour display which is less saturated for weak noisy signals but is more appealing and pleasant for viewing purposes, i.e. over saturation of the final display due to large noise components is prevented by assuring that the dynamic range of the chroma demodulators or the colour CRT or the chroma amplifier stages is not exceeded.

    Abstract: A protection circuit limits the collector current of a transistor employed as a clamp-to-ground stage in the event the collector terminal of the transistor is accidentally short circuited during conduction to a low-impedance voltage source. The protection circuit includes a transistor which has its base-emitter junction coupled across the base-emitter junction of the clamping transistor and has a collector resistor chosen to provide a saturation current for the protection transistor which holds the base-emitter junction voltage at a level which limits the collector current of the clamping transistor.
