Abstract:
A quantity of molten titanium is protected against embrittling contamination by containing all of the molten titanium within a receptacle and releasing along all titanium surfaces which are in contact with the receptacle the liquid and gaseous halide products of melting and decomposition (caused by heat of the molten titanium) of nonreactive flux consisting essentially of at least one halide which generates these protective products on exposure to temperatures of molten titanium.
Abstract:
A cassette tape recorder is adapted to record and play back a magnetic recording on an educational card by means of a plastic attachment which plugs into the tape recorder in the same manner as a tape cassette. The attachment comprises a horizontal base member with a rear edge that engages the cassette clamping spring, and an upstanding front wall which helps to define a card guide channel, and engages the front wall of the tape recorder cassette wall. A lockout projection at the rear of the base member engages the lockout feeler of the recorder to permit recording on the card, if desired. The front wall of the attachment is formed with cutouts to accommodate the recording and playback transducers and the tape drive pinch roller of the tape recorder, and curves away from the recording transducer so as to space the card from the protruding tape guides thereof. Behind the front wall of the attachment is an integrally formed resilient cantilever spring member having a card-abutting member thereon which bears resiliently against the rear surface of the card. As the card traverses the channel it is gripped between the pinch roller and the constant speed drive capstan of the tape recorder, resulting in constant speed drive of the card past the playback transducer for reproducing the auditory message recorded on the card. The attachment is also formed with a sideward projection for supporting the card, and a pair of clearance holes and a rectangular cutout which provide clearance respectively for the cassette locating pins and the supply and takeup reel spindles located on the deck of the tape recorder.
Abstract:
A LIQUID LEVEL CONTROL DEVICE FOR A REFRIGERATION SYSTEM HAVING A VESSEL IN WHICH LIQUID REFRIGERANT IS ACCUMULATED AT A LOW TEMPERATURE. THE CONTROL DEVICE COMPRISES A THERMOSTAT CLAMPED IN THERMAL CONTACT ABOUT A TELLTALE TUBE WHICH COMMUNICATES WITH THE VESSEL, THE THERMOSTAT HAVING A TEMPERATURE-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT PROVIDING ROTARY MOVEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE TEMPERATURE OF THE LIQUID LEVEL WITHIN THE TELLTALE TUBE. THE TEMPERATURE-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT IS MECHANICALLY CONNECTED TO AN ELECTRICAL SWITCH, PREFERABLY OF THE MERCURY TYPE, WHICH IN TURN, IS IN ELECTRICAL CONNECTION WITH A CONTROL VALVE WHICH REGULATES THE SUPPLY OF LIQUID REFRIGERANT TO THE VESSEL. A HEATING ELEMENT IN INTERCONNECTED IN WITH THE VESSEL. A HEATING ELEMENT IS INTERCONNECTED IN THE CIRCUIT AND ARRANGED TO HEAT THE TELLTALE TUBE IN PROXIMITY TO THE THERMOSTAT TO CAUSE THE THERMOSTAT TO REACT PROMPTLY AND ACCURATELY IN RESPONSE TO TEMPERATURE CHANGES INDUCED BY THE CHANGING LIQUID LEVEL.
Abstract:
TUBULAR FABRIC IS WARP-KNITTED TO HAVE A PLURALITY OF NARROW TUBULAR PORTIONS LOCATED SIDE-BY-SIDE BUT SPACED APART AND JOINED ENDWISE TO A SINGLE WIDE TUBULAR PORTION. KNIT ARTICLES SO FORMED, COMPRISING A PAOIR OF SPACED NARROW TUBES JOINED ENDWISE TO A WIDE TUBE, ARE USEFUL FOR GARMENTS IN WHICH THE WIDE TUBULAR PORTION SURROUNDS THE TRUNK OR BODY, AND THE NARROW TUBULAR PORTIONS SURROUND THE LIMBS, E.G., PANTY HOSE AND PANTY GIRDLES.
Abstract:
An apparatus and a method are described for detecting areas of a material which differ in opacity or reflectivity from surrounding areas, and particularly for detecting cell nuclei in stained biological preparations. The material is scanned line by line and the output is applied to a comparator which receives a threshold signal dependent on the opacity or reflectivity of the neighborhood of the area being scanned. The threshold signal is derived by summing the scanner output signal for that part of the line immediately preceding the point being scanned and corresponding parts of adjacent previously scanned lines. Means are provided for holding the threshold signal steady when a cell nucleus is being scanned.
Abstract:
Seamless hosiery, panty-hose, and the like are warp-knit, preferably of retractable or so-called ''''stretch'''' yarn, in a marquisette-like pattern and modifications thereof to provide tubular garment fabrics characterized by sheerness of the leg portions thereof and by either sheer or opaque body portions.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for the disposal of solid waste material in which the refuse is transported out to sea to a disposal barge. The barge is provided with a large diameter telescoping pipe extending below the surface. The upper end of the pipe extends approximately 50 feet above the surface. The refuse is conveyed from the barge to the upper end of the pipe and discharged into the pipe. The accumulation of material in the pipe from the surface of the sea to the top of the pipe causes the material to be forced downward in the pipe until it reaches the 300 foot level below the surface. Water pressure at that level compresses virtually all of the refuse in the pipe so that it descends to the sea bottom. The end of the pipe is provided with a trap for any of the materials which will float even after being compressed at that depth.
