Abstract: 18,329. Davy Bros., and Holmes, T. E. Sept. 11. Valves and valve-gear.-In hydraulic presses on the steam - intensifier principle, positively-closed lift valves used for the admission and exhaust of the steam are operated by a single handing-lever and at the same time controlled by a hunting-gear such as that described in Specification No. 781, A.D. 1905, to prevent the steam piston from overrunning the proper limit of its travel and to cause the steam to be automatically cut off at a position corresponding to the position in which the hunting- lever is held. Steam is admitted to and exhausted from the intensifier through a passage 18 which is connected to the valve-box 19 to which the steam and exhaust pipes are connected, admission and exhaust being controlled by separate balanced lift valves 22, 23. The admission valve 22 is attached to a floating lever 34, one end of which is connected to the short arm of the handing-lever 30 and the other at 49 to a rod 48 which is attached to the hunting-gear described in the above-mentioned Specification. The exhaust valve 23 is connected to the handing-lever and hunting-mechanism by means of levers 38, 51 pivoted to the framing of the valve casing. The effect is that any movement of the lever 30 which tends to open the valve 22 tends to close the valve 23, and vice versa. The necessary lost motion to allow the hunting- mechanism to act is furnished by means of the pin and slot as shown, or by equivalent mechanism. The press head is raised by means of steam cylinders, the supply to which is regulated by means of a piston valve 29, which is normally operated by the handing-lever 30 by means of a link 56 ; when rapid strokes, however, are being made, this is detached and the valve held open by the weight 57, thus furnishing a cushion of steam beneath the lifting-cylinders.

Abstract: 289,913. Holmes, T. E. Jan. 8, 1927. Universal joints.-Coupling boxes 5 for connecting universal shafts 10 to the pinion shaft 11 or to a spindle 1 of a rolling mill have opposed internal sockets 6 for swivel blocks 7 carried by trunnions 8 on the universal shaft, and opposed internal sockets for engaging projections on the roll or pinion spindle or on adapters 2 secured to these spindles. Keys 12 may be fitted between the inter-engaging faces on the coupling-box and on the roll spindle or its adapter 2. When the universal shafts are in close proximity, the coupling boxes 25, Fig. 6, may be of oval section, the major axes of the adjacent coupling boxes being disposed at right angles. Abutments 36 may be provided to coact with bearing pieces 38 on the ends of the universal shafts. Specification 116,576 is referred to.

Abstract: 268,540. Stewart & Co., Ltd., D., and Holmes, T. E. March 16, 1926. Shearing.-A shearing - machine comprises a block 3 inclined to correspond with the upper blade, whereby the piece of metal cut off is prevented from curling. Ejectors 4 with inclined top edges are yieldingly supported by a hanging weight 9 through levers 8, 5, the ejectors rising on the ascent of the upper blade to discharge the scrap to a conveyor 11 by which it is transferred to a furnace charging box.

Abstract: 118,496. Stewart & Co., D., and Holmes, T. E. Oct. 11, 1917. Securing rolls on shafts.- In plate and like rolling- mills driven by toothed gearing only, to secure positive driving of the upper roll and yet prevent surfacemarking of the work owing to small differences in the speeds of the upper roll and the work and lower roll, a friction connexion is introduced between the upper roll and its driving universal shaft. The connexion consists of a cylindrical driving- member E, enclosing the coupling A of the universal shaft A , and embraced by a cylindrical driven member D fast on the spindle of the upper roll A. Screwadjusted springs G bear through radial plungers F on pads J surfaced with frictional material and bearing on the member E.

Abstract: 5200. Davy Bros., and Holmes, T. E. Feb. 28. Rolling annular bodies. -In a machine for rolling wheel tyres, metal hoops, &c., the rolls A, B, Fig. 4, are removably and adjustably held in rotating spindles 12, that of the roll B being mounted in a slide B having guides at each corner, an hydraulic piston 38 arranged in the line of action, and a parallelmotion device 34, 35, 36, 37. The rolls A, B are secured by cotters 13 against a distance-piece of the desired size. The spindles 12 have integral or attached flanges A , B to act on the sides of the hoop C and are axially adjusted by means of nuts 21, 22, sleeve 20, and ball bearing 24. Before rolling, the hoop C is placed round the roll A and held up by guide-rollers 40 carried by slides 41 adjusted simultaneously by a hand-wheel 43.

Abstract: 20,279. Davy Bros., and Holmes, T. E. Sept. 5. Shearing; forging-machines. - In a poweroperated shears, forging-press, or the like having a falling table adapted to descend with the severed or displaced portion of the work, this movement is transmitted through the medium of an hydraulic column from the press-head, but only during the active portion of the downstroke. As applied to an hydraulically - operated shearing-machine, the table 22 is normally held up by hydraulic pressure below the pistons 23 derived from an accumulator 26, but is moved down by water forced out of the cylinders 38 and through pipes 39, 39 . During the inactive part of the down - stroke however, the valve 42 is held up as shown by the accumulator pressure in the cavity 63, so that the water expelled from the cylinders 38 passes into the tank 40. When however the blade 14 encounters the resistance of the billet 11, the pressure rises to effect the cut and the increased pressure acting in the cavity 46 forces down the valve 42 and effects the lowering of the table 22. The idle movement of the cutter 14 may be effected by water from the tank 40 passing the non-return valve 50, and after the cut, the piston 16 is returned by means (not shown), while the pilot 58 is held open to allow the excess water in the cylinder 17 to return to the tank 40. The valve 42 allows the loss from the cylinders 38 to be made up. A fixed gauge stop may be employed, and the table may be arranged to fall rather more than the cutter 14, so that the constantly moving rollers 21 will at once carry away the severed portion below the stop. The cutter may be operated by gearing driven by steam, hydraulic, or electric power, arranged in each case to close the valve 42 during the active part of the stroke only. The link-work 29, 30, 33, 34, 35 prevents the table from tilting.
