A polylactic acid (PLA) composite material includes biodegradable and/or renewable materials such as purified lignin recovered as a byproduct in organosolv processes. The result is a material suitable for additive printing, with improved properties but that is still environmentally friendly. A coupling agent such as silane, diisocyanate crosslinking agent, and reactive extrusion agent may improve the blending of polylactic acid and purified lignin. Additional filler materials such as fibers or their powders may be added to significantly improve the mechanical properties of three-dimensional printed objects.

A flameless combustion oven arranges gas and air jets to directly impinge on product, being heated to substantially promote transfer of heat to the product by impingement transfer rather than by conventional radiation and thermally induced convection. In one embodiment, a set of spaced air and gas nozzles are uniformly distributed on a wall of the oven opposite the product to provide substantially uniform impingement over a surface of the product.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a system of wind turbines connected to a single unit electric generator to produce electrical power whereby the wind turbine blades rotate coaxially with a main rotor shaft instead of perpendicular to the shaft axis. In this respect, the wind turbine rotor can face the wind from any direction and does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, thus, eliminating the need for a yaw system. Moreover, translation of mechanical to torque of the main rotor drive allows the drive components such as the gearbox and generator to be placed near the ground of each wind turbine improving accessibility for maintenance.
Abstract:
A system that characterizes majors and academic courses with vectors that can be matched to testable student interests is provided. Majors and courses can then be recommended by a matching of student interests with characterized courses. The system combines elements of both psychology and technology, to greatly reduce the challenge of selecting courses and majors, by automating parts of the complex selection process to produce understandable options. Improved matching of majors and courses to individuals can provide multiple benefits including improved educational outcomes, enhanced student retention, and significant reduction in student debt.

A field emission transistor uses carbon nanotubes positioned to extend along a substrate plane rather than perpendicularly thereto. The carbon nanotubes may be pre-manufactured and applied to the substrate and then may be etched to create a gap between the carbon nanotubes and an anode through which electrons may flow by field emission. A planar gate may be positioned beneath the gap to provide a triode structure.

An in-ear microphone all owing assessment of sound pressure level directly of an individual's ear canal without intervening conduits between the sound source (i.e., ear canal) and the microphone is provided. Sound from an in-ear communications device may also be isolated from ambient noise using an in-line noise detector for recording the noise from the in-ear communications device.
