Abstract: A method for recovering a file system in a portable terminal is provided to use a directory or file stored in an HDD(Hard Disk Drive) stably in case an error is generated at the HDD, by backing up the metadata of the HDD and restoring the file system of the HDD. A control part accesses an MP3 player mode according to a user's request(S301). The control part judges whether it is possible to extract metadata for the MP3 player mode(S303). If it is possible to extract the metadata, the control part extracts the metadata and stores the extracted metadata in a memory(S305). However, in case it is impossible to extract the metadata, the control part extracts previously stored metadata from the memory(S307). Then the control part copies the extracted meta data to an HDD(S309). If the reproduction of the metadata to the HDD is completed, the control part judges that recovery for the file system of the HDD has been completed(S310).
