Abstract: A continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system (300) is provided by embodiments of the present invention. This continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system includes a unique fluid level sensor having a point light source (202), parabolic reflector (204), sensor array (308), and detection, processing and control system (310). The point light source illumines a parabolic reflector wherein the point light source is located at the focus of the parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector reflects light from the point light source to produce a parallel light curtain (210). This parallel light curtain is parallel to an axis of symmetry of the parabolic reflector. The parallel light curtain illumines a chamber (302) such as a chamber in an ophthalmic surgical device used to contain surgical fluid (304). The sensor array coupled to the chamber detects the parallel light curtain illuminating the chamber. The sensor array provides an output to a detection/processing/control system in order to determine the fluid level within the chamber. This optical method of determining the surgical fluid levels may be advantageous in that it prevents physical contamination of the surgical fluids.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide top and bottom clamping of a surgical cassette. One embodiment of the present invention includes a surgical casset te adapted for use in a surgical system having a first side (e.g., an inner side) and second side (e.g., an outer side). The surgical cassette, according to one embodiment, comprises a body portion configured to interface on its first side with a surgical console during use, a first clamping portion projecting from the top of the body portion configured to contact a first clamp rail on the cassette's second side during use and a second clamping portion projecting from the bottom of the body portion configured to contact a second clamp rail on the cassette's second side duri ng use.

Abstract: A fluidic cassette detection mechanism is used for detecting the presence of a cassette (12) at a certain position within a fluidic module (10). When the cassette is inserted into the fluidic module to a certain position and orientation, the detector mechanism senses the presence of the fluidic cassette and provides an appropriate signal to the control system (28) software. The system software can then command the closing of a clamping mechanism which holds the cassette during a procedure. The fluidic cassette detector mechanism can comprise a number of mechanical probes (22), optical interrupt switches (24), and miscellaneous components including springs and screws. The probes (22) extend beyond the face of the fluidic module (10) faceplate and beyond the rear stops of the clamps. When the fluidic cassette is inserted into the fluidic module (10) far enough to sufficiently move the probes, the probes trip the switches (24) to signal that the cassette is in the correct position and orientation for the clamping motion to begin. The correct position and orientation are sensed due to the use of the probes (22) in the mechanism. The probes are spaced sufficiently apart on a diagonal, and raised beyond the rear stops of the cassette clamps, such that when both probes are moved appropriately, the cassette must be acceptably parallel to the clamps, and in the correct position, for the cassette clamping motion to begin.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a system and method for allowin g a user to select the release modality of a surgical cassette. Example release modes can include an instant or latching mode, a continuous mode or a delay mode. An embodiment of the present invention can include providing a user interface that allows a user to select a cassette release mode for a surgical cassette from a set of cassette release modes, determining that a release request is asserted, and releasing the surgical cassette from surgical instrumentation according to the selected cassette release mode. According to one embodiment, the release modes for the cassette can include an instant mode, a continuous mode and a delay mode. The user can also select, for example, whether the release command can be asserted through a button, user interface or both.
