    Abstract: The present invention relates to emulsion-based sunscreen compositions, including only inorganic ultraviolet radi-ation (UV)absorbers. Specifically, it relates to sunscreen compositions in the form of oil-in-water (OAV) and water-in-oil (W/0) emulsions that contain inorganic UV-absorbers and an SPF-boosting additive. The sunscreen compositions include an emulsion of an oil phase and a water or hydrophilic liquid phase, an inorganic UV-absorber in the oil phase, and an additive in the water or hydrophilic liquid phase, the additive capable of boosting the sun protection factor (SPF) of the sunscreen composition by at least 20%.

    Abstract: A liquid cleansing composition comprising a cleansing surfactant, an adso rbed skin-care agent, adsorptive polymeric particles having an adsorption ca pacity of at least 2 g of skin care agent per gm of dry polymeric particles, a polymeric thickening agent having a molecular weight in the range of 500, 000 - 10,000,000 Dalton, a water-soluble polymer having a molecular weight i n the range of 200 - 50,000 Dalton, and a hydrophilic liquid, the said clean sing composition having the following features i) the low molecular weight, water- soluble polymer component functions as a foam-boosting and thixotropy - boosting agent; ii) the ratio of the Brookfield viscosity at 1 rpm of spin dle speed to the Brookfield viscosity at 100 rpm of spindle speed is at leas t 10; and iii) the foam-volume is at least 20% higher with the water-soluble , polymeric, foam-boosting component than without it.

    Abstract: A sunscreen composition, either impregnating a wipe substrate or comprisi ng a sunscreen spray, wherein the composition comprises an oil phase contain ing a UV-absorbing organic sunscreen active, said oil phase dispersed stably as emulsion droplets in a water phase that contains i) a booster for the su n protection factor (SPF), comprising a combination of water-dispersible par ticulate materials, one of which is smectite clay, and a water-soluble or wa ter-dispersible phenolic polymer; and ii) a water-soluble or water-dispersib le polymer having a weak acid group, a weight average molecular weight of 1, 000 - 100, 000 Dalton, and an anionic charge density of no less than 4 mill iequivalent per gram of the polymer.

    Abstract: A stable, oil-in-water (O-W) emulsion-based sunscreen composition having at least one water-insoluble, organic UV-absorber having a water-solubility of much less than 0.1% by weight, contained in the oil phase of the sunscreen emulsion, comprising i) zinc oxide (ZnO) particles having a surface free of any prior coating of any inorganic oxide and hydrophobic material, remaining dispersed in the water phase of the sunscreen emulsion; ii) at least one non- or low-foaming, non-cationic, hydrophilic polymer, capable of dispersing or deflocculating the ZnO particles but incapable of thickening an aqueous composition to a viscosity of greater than 100 cps at 25° C., wherein the viscosity is measured using a Brookfield viscometer operated at 10 rpm for 15 seconds, when the polymer is added at an amount of 1%, based on the total weight of the polymer and water in the aqueous composition; iii) at least one phenolic polymer, capable of functioning as a dispersing or deflocculating agent for particulate material(s), and adsorbing at an oil-water interface; and v) a buffering agent for the water phase of the sunscreen emulsion.

    Abstract: Concentrated suspensions of smectite clays are obtained as either relatively "thin" or highly shear-thinning slurries that are easy to pump, by adding one or more of certain cationic polymers whose weight average molecular weight, Mw, is 50,000 or higher. It was found during the course of the invention that a cationic polymer with an Mw of 10,000 did not work, while the same polymer with a bimodal Mw of 50,000 and 30,000 worked satisfactorily. To achieve the full advantage of the present invention, the cationic polymer preferably has 1 to 10 milliequivalents of cationic charge per gram of the polymer, and more preferably 5 to 10 milliequivalents of cationic charge per gram of the polymer, and most preferably 6 to 8 milliequivalents of cationic charge per gram of the polymer.
