    Abstract: Embodiments can provide reversible or dual orientation USB plug connectors for mating with standard USB receptacle connectors, e.g., a standard Type A USB receptacle connector. Accordingly, the present invention may be compatible with any current or future electronic device that includes a standard USB receptacle connector. USB plug connectors according to the present invention can have a 180 degree symmetrical, double orientation design, which enables the plug connector to be inserted into a corresponding receptacle connector in either of two intuitive orientations. Some embodiments of the present invention may be used with or require a non-standard USB receptacle connector. Thus, embodiments of the present invention may reduce the potential for USB connector damage and user frustration during the incorrect insertion of a USB plug connector into a corresponding USB receptacle connector of an electronic device.

    Abstract: A plug connector comprises a body 42 and a connector tab 44 extending from the body and configured to be inserted into a corresponding receptacle connector. The tab carries external contacts 106 on a first surface, including first and second data contacts configured to enable communication using a first communication protocol and an ID contact configured to carry information that identifies the communication protocol associated with the first and second data contacts. Circuitry 108a, 108b coupled to the ID contact is configured to participate in a handshaking algorithm that communicates the information that identifies the communication protocol (eg USB, UART) associated with the first and second data contacts over the ID contact. The plug may also have further contacts on a second surface of the tab, configured so that the plug may be used either way up.
