Abstract: An authentication controller 180 coupled to a first communication port of a portable media device 102 is allowed to provide authentication on behalf of an accessory device 112 coupled to a second communication port of the portable media device. A cross transport connector 106 may include a connector to couple with an accessory and a connector 108 to couple with a portable media device such that the accessory can be coupled to the second communication port of the portable media device. The cross-transport connector 106 also includes an authentication controller 180. The authentication controller may request authentication from the media device over the first communication port of the portable media device. The request may also include an identifier of the second port, to which authenticated permissions obtained via the first port may be transferred. The ports may be 30-pin connectors, USBs, serial, uart, firewire or wireless ports. The method may use a random number encrypted using a private key.

Abstract: A portable communication device (PCD) 402, accessory 420 and method are provided. The PCD comprises an accessory interface 414 coupled to a processor 404 and a power control module 410. The accessory interface includes a connector 504 having at least one data pin 510(2)(3) associated with an asymmetric communication protocol, a power input pin 510(4) coupled to the power control module, a power output pin 510(5) coupled to the power control module, and a pair of accessory identification pins 510(6)(7). The PCD connector 504 also includes a sensor 530 connected to detect a resistance applied across the pair of accessory identification pins and configured to generate an identification signal indicative of the detected resistance. The power control module is configured to determine, based on the identification signal, whether to provide a first power to the power output pin 510(5) or to receive a second power from the power input pin 510(4); and wherein the accessory interface is configured to determine, based at least in part on the identification signal, whether to operate in a first mode or a second mode, such as host or device mode, of the asymmetric communication protocol. An accessory 420 includes controller 424 and a connector 502 having at least one USB power pin 512(5), at least one ground pin 521(8), data pins 512(2)(3) and a pair or identification pins 512(6)(7). A resistor 520 is connected across the ID pins, and has a value indicating to a connected PCD that accessory operates in a device mode and that the PCD should operate in a host mode. The accessory then receives power from the PCD using the power pin 512(8).
