[Also in Division A5] The invention relates to substituted ureidophenyl phenyl carbamates of the general formula in which R 1 denotes a phenyl radical which may be substituted by halogen, nitro, methoxy, carboxy, lower alkyl or lower haloalkyl, or a cycloaliphatic radical having 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the cycloaliphatic ring which may be substituted by halogen or alkyl and R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 denote hydrogen, a phenyl radical, or a lower saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted by halogen, the term " lower alkyl " denoting an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The compounds may be prepared by treating a N - (m-hydroxyphenyl) - N 1 - substituted urea with a carbamyl halide R 1 R 2 NCOX wherein X is halogen. Compounds in which R 2 is hydrogen may be prepared by treating a N-(m-hydroxyphenyl)-N 1 substituted urea with an isocyanate R 1 NCO. The intermediate N-(m-hydroxyphenyl)-N 1 substituted ureas may be prepared by reacting a m-aminophenol with the appropriate carbamyl halides preferably chloride, in the presence of agents binding hydrogen halide, or with appropriate isocyanates. Compounds claimed per se are m-(methylureido) - phenyl N - m - methylphenyl - carbamate and m-(3,3-dimethylureido)-phenyl N-p-chlorophenyl carbamate. In an example, dimethyl carbamyl chloride is reacted with m-aminophenol to produce N-(m-hydroxyphenyl)-N 1 ,N 1 -dimethylurea which is reacted with p-chlorophenyl isocyanate to produce m - (3,3 - dimethylureido) - phenyl N -p - chlorophenyl carbamate.

    Abstract: The invention comprises reaction products (half-esters) of dicarboxylic or tetracarboxylic anhydrides and ureas of the formula where R is methyl, methoxy or isobutinyl, each X is hydrogen, halogen or C1- 4 alkyl and n is 1 or 2. Specified anhydrides are those of succinic, maleic, citraconic, glutaric, phthalic, pyromellitic, naphthalic and diphenic acids; and of hydrogenated, chlorinated and/or nitrated phthalic acids, chlorinated succinic acid, mono- and dichloromaleic acid, and chlorinated and/or nitrated naphthalic and diphenic acids. These compounds are herbicides (see Division A5).ALSO:Agents for controlling unwanted vegetation are reaction products of dicarboxylic or tetracarboxylic anhydrides with ureas of the formula where R is methyl, methoxy or isobutinyl, each X is hydrogen, halogen or C1-4 alkyl, and n is 1 or 2, (see Division C2), together with a liquid or solid carrier. The active compounds may be used in the form of salts. The compositions may also contain emulsifiers and/or dispersing agents, and other active ingredients such as urea derivatives, carbamates, halogenated fatty acids, triazines, uracils or boron and arsenic derivatives.

    Abstract: Compounds of the general formula wherein R1 represents a methyl, methoxy or isobutynyl radical, R2 represents a C1 to C4 alkyl radical optionally substituted by a hydroxyl group, a C3 or C4 alkenyl radical bearing two or three chlorine atoms, or the 2,3,6-trichlorobenzyl radical, X represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom and the R2SCH2- and X-groups are in the m or p positions relative to the amido group, may be prepared by heating N - chloromethylphenyl- or N - chloromethyl-chlorophenyl - N1 - dimethyl or -N1 - methyl-N1-isobutynyl -ureas with the corresponding alkenyl- or trichlorobenzyl-mercaptans or their metal salts in the presence of acid binding agents, e.g. trialkylamines. The compounds of the invention have herbicidal activity.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions contain compounds of the general formula wherein R1 represents a methyl, methoxy or isobutynyl radical, R2 represents a C1 to C4 alkyl radical optionally substituted by a hydroxyl group, a C3 or C4 alkenyl radical bearing two or three chlorine atoms, or the 2, 3, 6-trichloro-benzyl radical, X represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom and the R2SCH2- and X-groups are in the m or p positions relative to the amido group, in admixture with conventional carriers. The compositions may also contain other, unspecified, active substances, fertilizers and emulsifiers and dispersing agents, e.g. the salts of alkylbenzene-sulphonic acids and of ammonium compounds, oxalkylated phenol derivatives and sodium lignin sulphonate.
