    Abstract: A multitube fixed bed reactor and the use of such a reactor for carrying out catalytic gas-phase reactions, in particular for carrying out exothermic and endothermic catalytic gas-phase reactions such as the preparation of phthalic anhydride (PA), acrylic acid, methacrylic acid (MAA), acrolein, maleic anhydride (MA), glyoxal, phosgene, hydrocyanic acid or vinyl formamide (VFA). In a relatively large multitube reactor in which a large amount of heat of reaction is generated owing to the numerous catalyst tubes ( 17 ) and has to be removed, it is proposed that the ratio of tube spacing t to external tube diameter d a be made dependent on the reactor diameter or on the external tube bundle diameter d RBa . At an external diameter of the catalyst tube bundle ( 18 ) of more than 4 meters, a ratio of tube spacing d to external tube diameter d a of at least 1.3 is preferred.

    Abstract: An exothermic reactor has heat exchange pipes which, on leaving the reactor, sub-divide into a multitude of channels. These channels are joined immediately by incoming passages bearing heat medium from an external heat exchange unit. A reactor (1) with a heat exchanger circuit consisting of a battery of heat medium contact pipes (2) surrounded by reactants. The reactor has an inlet ring pipe (5) at one end and an outlet ring pipe (4) at the other, with mantle apertures (6, 7) for the incoming and outgoing heat exchange medium (3) that is circulated by pump to the external heat exchanger. Immediately on entering the outgoing ring pipe (4), the heat medium is sub-divided (3a, 3b) and mixed intensively with heat-exchange medium from the external heat exchanger.     Abstract: A reactor includes a bundle of contact tubes, through which a reaction mixture is passed from top to bottom while a heat exchange medium (HEM) is circulated through the space surrounding the tubes. Part of the HEM stream in the lower half of the reactor is fed directly into the intermediate space in the uppermost part of the reactor via a central conduit which widens to a funnel. A reactor includes a bundle of contact tubes, through which a reaction mixture is passed from top to bottom while a heat exchange medium (HEM) is circulated through the space surrounding the tubes. Ring lines are provided at both ends of the reactor. HEM is supplied and removed via jacket openings using pump(s), and HEM (or its partial stream) is optionally passed through external heat exchanger(s). HEM is supplied to the lower ring line and recycled via the upper ring line. Diverting plates are fitted alternately at the middle and sides of the reactor. Part of the HEM stream in the lower half of the reactor is fed directly into the intermediate space in the uppermost part of the reactor via a central conduit which widens to a funnel. Independent claims are also included for three alternative types of reactors: (a) A reactor as previously described where openings are provided in the upper ring line to draw off the HEM stream via the uppermost region of the contact tubes; (b) A reactor as previously described where one or more annular intermediate walls, with openings for HEM in the uppermost region of the contact tube bundle, are provided in the region above the uppermost diverting plate; or (c) A reactor as previously described where the contact tube bundle is formed with one or more tube-free hollow cylindrical intermediate spaces and a static mixer is optionally provided in the intermediate spaces and/or in the tube-free internal space of the reactor.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a pump (1) comprising a pump feed tube (13) for transporting a heat exchange medium (6) for a reactor containing a bundle of catalyst tubes (2). The pump (1) has a housing (14) that surrounds the pump feed tube (13) and comprises an opening (15) in the lower part of the housing (14), which allows the heat exchange medium (6) that is drawn from the lower section of the reactor by the pump (1) to flow into the housing (14). The medium flows upwards in the section lying between the internal wall of the housing (14) and the external wall of the pump feed tube (13), optionally over a heat exchanger (18) and into the interior of the pump feed tube (13) via an opening (16) in the upper section of said pump feed tube (13). The medium then flows through the pump feed tube from top to bottom, into the reactor via an opening (17) in the lower section of said tube (13) and into the upper section of the intermediate chamber between the catalyst tubes (2).
