Abstract: Optical recording medium containing a light-absorbing layer on a support. The light-absorbing layer consists of a dye (I) or contains a dye of the formula I in which R , R , R and R , independently of one another, represent hydrogen, halogen or C1- to C4-alkyl, and/or one of the radicals R , R , R and R represent C1- to C4-alkoxy, hydroxy or phenyl, and/or R and R and/or R and R each represent the radical of an anellated benzo ring, and the dye has an absorption maximum in the range from 590 to 660 nm. The medium can be written and read by means of He-Ne lasers and is very stable with respect to atmospheric influences and daylight. The dyes used are non-toxic.

Abstract: Optical recording medium comprising a substrate and a layer made of at least one dye of the formula A-N = N-K or a layer containing at least one dye of the formula (I). In the formulae, A represents an azo component based on thiophene-2 or isothiazole-5 substituted in the 3-position by cyano, carboalkoxy or nitro, and K represents a coupling component based on aniline, 1-naphthylamine or 2-aminothiazole. The dyes have absorption maxima in the range from 590 to 660 nm. The recording media can be written and read with an He-Ne laser and are very stable with respect to atmospheric influences and daylight.
