Abstract: A ferromagnetic material is based upon an exhange coupling mechanism in which a hard magnetic phase (1) and a soft magnetic phase (20 are combined. While hard magnetic materials have a high anisotropy and a relatively low magnetic saturation, the soft materials exhibit the opposite effect. By coupling the materials an optimum is achieved. The volume of the soft magentic material is selected to be greater than that of the hard magnetic material. After removing a magnetic field from the material the remnant field effect is such that MRev is greater than 2.5. The material is an alloy of REx.Fey.Bz.Vu.Siv, where REx is a rare erth material. USE/ADVANTAGE - High performance material for permanent magnets, broad band microwave absorbers, magnetic recording material.

Abstract: Preparation of protected aldehydes and ketones of formulae (I) and (II) comprises addition of alcohols of formula (III) to acetylenes or allenes of formulae (IV) and (V) in the gas phase at elevated temperatures in the presence of a heterogeneous, X-ray amorphic zinc or cadmium silicates. The content of zinc or cadmium, calculated as the oxide, is 1-40 wt.%. The catalyst is prepared by bringing a zinc or cadmium salt and an organic acid (which decomposes at below 400 degrees C) into contact with amorphic silica. Formation of the catalyst takes place at 50-500 degrees C in the presence of an OH-containing compound selected from water, 1-10C alkanols, 2-6C diols or triols or 1-6C carboxylic acids.
