Abstract: A process for the preparation of branched polyarylene sulphides of high molecular weight comprises reacting dihaloaromatic compounds with alkali metal sulphides in the presence of from 0.5 to 10 mol% of alkali metal sulphite and/or alkaline earth metal sulphite, based on the amount of alkali metal sulphide, and from 0.05 to 3 mol% of tri- or polyhaloaromatic compounds, based on the amount of dihaloaromatic compounds, in 5- to 7-membered lactams which are substituted on the nitrogen atom by an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical as solvent at a temperature of from 180 to 350 DEG C, in which alkali metal sulphides in an N-substituted lactam with a boiling point of above 220 DEG C are introduced into a reactor, the haloaromatic compounds are added at a temperature above the boiling point of the dihaloaromatic compounds used and below the boiling point of the N-substituted lactam used, at the rate at which they are consumed.

Abstract: The low-molecular-weight polyarylene sulphides are prepared by reacting a dihaloaromatic with an alkali metal sulphide in an N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidone having a boiling point above 220 DEG C at temperatures of between 180 DEG C and 350 DEG C. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature above the boiling point of the dehaloaromatic but below the boiling point of the N-alkylpyrrolidone at atmospheric pressure, in which the solvent and the alkali metal sulphide are initially introduced and heated to the reaction temperature and the dihaloaromatic is added at such a low rate that the temperature of the reaction mixture does not drop by more than 10 DEG C.

Abstract: Practically uncrosslinked graft polymers (I) consist of (A) a base polymer of 40-100(wt.)% polyphenylene ether and 0-60% vinyl-aromatic polymer, (B) a monomer with a C=C double bond, in which the double bond C atoms are substd. by only one CO gp. and (C) opt. other olefinically unsatd. monomers. The novelty is that (B) also contains 2 CO gps. linked through a C=C double bond, with the structure (i). Pref. (B) is mono-2-acryloxyethyl maleate (B1) or mono-2-methacryloxyethyl maleate (B2). The graft polymer contains 80-99.9, pref. 90-99.9% (A), 0.1-20, pref. 0.1-10% (B) and 0-20, pref. 0% (C). Graft polymerisation is carried out at 170-350 deg.C (practically) in the absence of a free radical initiator.
