Abstract: Preparation of hypophosphites, comprises electrolysis of a mixture of white phosphorus, water, at least one cosolvent and optionally a conducting salt under the exclusion of oxygen at a pH of 1-6.5 with a current density at which the anode potential is at most 1.85 V (versus silver/silver chloride). An independent claim is included for the preparation of phosphites, comprising electrolysis of a mixture of white phosphorus, water, at least one cosolvent and optionally a conducting salt under the exclusion of oxygen at a pH of 0-6.5 with a current density at which the anode potential of at least 1.86 V (versus silver/silver chloride) and at most of 2.20 V (versus silver/silver chloride), where nickel is excluded as an anode material.
