Abstract: A cartridge 444, 644, 744 is adapted for mounting upon a receptacle 442, 642 in a parenterial fluid administration set 420 for delivering a drug or other beneficial agent to a patient. The cartridge 444, 644, 744 includes a beneficial agent-containing chamber 606 slidable from a first, pre-use position to a second, post-use position. The cartridge includes a hollow tube 496 in which the chamber 606 is at least partially mounted. At least one cannula 500 is mounted to the hollow tube and extends opposite the chamber. A protective cover or cap 530 maintains a chamber protective position that prevents inadvertent movement of the chamber that would accidentally engage the cartridge chamber with a flow path member, such as the cannula. The cover is removed in order to engage the chamber. After delivery of the agent to the patient, the cartridge is removed from the receptacle 442,642 and the cover 530 is selectively moved to a cannula protective position in which the cover 530 is securely mounted about the second, opposite end of the hollow tube, covering the cannula 500.

Abstract: A needless connector is provided which utilizes a resealable preslit septum valve. The valve is resiliently restrained relative to a housing with the valve and housing configured to accept a standard male luer lock having a luer tip which penetrates the valve through the opening to extend within the housing and a luer locking flange of the luer lock extending about the housing. The valve includes a disk shaped upper portion covering the opening, a lower portion spaced from the housing and extending downward from the disk shaped portion into a passageway defined by the housing, and an annular skirt to attach the septum to the housing. The connector exhibits satisfactory leak pressure after multiple connections and disconnects to the luer lock fitting and long periods of indwell of the luer tip.

Abstract: A pre-slit infection site (34) includes a housing (40) with a flow path therethrough. A first end (42) of the housing (40) carries a pre-slit septum (52). One form of a blunt cannula (98), usable with the injection site (34), carries a locking member (100). When the pre-slit injection site (34) slidabiy receives the blunt cannula (98), the locking member (100) latches to the infection site (34) and creates a mechanically coupled unit. Another form of the cannula (280) includes a tube having a tapered distal end region (298) and having elongate discharge slots (294) for reducing contact surface area and for directing the flow laterally out of the cannula. The cannula may also include a rounded lead post (330), an annular barb (394), and axially oriented grooves (268). A blood sampling system utilizing an in-line pre-slit injection site (492) and a shielded blunt cannula (512). An adapter for transferring fluids from a syringe with a blunt cannula to an evacuated tube, including a pre-slit infection site (554) and a shroud covered needle (556) with a rubber sleeve.

Abstract: A medical connector that can be connected to a male luer lock conforming to ISO standards uses a resealable pre-slit diaphragm valve 28. The diaphragm includes a disk shaped upper portion 34 covering the end of tube 26. This upper portion has a swabbable upper surface. A portion 46 of the diaphragm extends into the tube interior 36 from upper portion 34. A slit 46 extends through portion 46. The valve 28 has a skirt 52 which can be adhered to either the inside or outside of tube 26. In use a luer tip penetrates the slit 46. the resilience of the diaphragm causes the sides of the slit to seal against the luer tip, providing a leakproof seal. When the luer is withdrawn, the sides of the slit close to prevent leakage from the connector.

The housing has a blood inlet and a blood outlet communicating with the port and axially offset longitudinally of the access port to form a "Z" like configuration. This arrangement facilitates debubbling during filling of the line and ease of blood clearance after sampling.

Abstract: Disclosed is a stopper for use with containers to provide needleless access to the container with a cannula having a blunt penetrating tip. Also disclosed is a system comprising the stopper, container and cannula. The stopper includes a disc having an upper face and a lower face, and a plug extending from the disc into the container. Also included is a diaphragm, defined by a target region in the upper face and a cross channel in the disc for controlling the force needed to penetrate the stopper with the cannula. The plug includes a first inward surface for guiding the cannula and a second inward surface for engaging the cannula to minimize wetting of the outside of the cannula. In a preferred embodiment, the first surface extends down from the cross channel on the lower side of the disc, radially outwardly to a maximum diameter and the second inwardly facing surface extends down from the first surface radially inwardly to a minimum diameter to form the cannula seal. Also shown is a centrally located piercing point positioned to pre-slit the diaphragm. An overcap may be provided to alternatively have an axially aligned boss and bore positioned to pre-slit the diaphragm. In another embodiment, the invention includes an annular pre-slit disc formed of self sealing material and positioned to reduce spray back when inserting or removing the cannula.
