Abstract: A dryer section apparatus (10C) is disclosed for drying a web extending therethrough. The apparatus (10C) includes a plurality of lower dryer drums (20C, 34, 36) and a plurality of upper dryer drums (16C, 18C, 38). A lower felt (14C) partially wraps each lower dryer drum (20C, 34, 36) of the plurality of lower dryer drums and each lower intermediate roll (24C, 28C, 40) of a plurality of lower intermediate rolls is disposed between adjacent lower dryer drums such that each alternate lower intermediate roll (24C, 40) guides both the web and the lower felt (14C). An upper felt (12C) partially wraps each of the upper dryer drums (16C, 18C, 38) of the plurality of upper dryer drums. The apparatus also includes a plurality of upper intermediate rolls (44, 22C, 46) with each upper intermediate roll being disposed between adjacent upper dryer drums such that each alternate upper intermediate roll (22C) guides both the web and the felt so that the web is transferred in open draw between adjacent upper and lower dryer drums thereby minimizing the length of the open draw and inhibiting web flutter during transfer between upper and lower dryer drums.

Abstract: A self-loading controlled deflection roll (6) has its tubular shell (52) rotatably supported on front and back bearings (42) which, in turn, are mounted on a bearing ring (12) which is outwardly-movable arcuately on a pair of opposed pistons (24, 26) and shoes (28, 30) at either end of the roll. The bearing ring (12) at each end of the roll is pivotally linked with the roll shaft (10) to prevent skewing movement between their longitudinal axes. The opposed pistons (24, 26) and shoes (28, 30) operating within the bearing rings (12) at the edges of the roll shell position and load the roll (6) into and out of nipping engagement with a mating roll (8) independently of the operation of a separate nip shoe (60) which controls the deflection of the roll. The pistons (24, 26) within the bearing rings can be used to either provide additional nip loading independent of the nip shoe (60), or provide a counterload in the opposite direction. Abstract: A coating apparatus for applying a coating onto a surface of a moving web (Wa). The apparatus includes a backing member (12a) which defines a perforate surface (36) such that when the member (12a) is connected to a source of partial vacuum (38), the web (12a) is drawn towards the perforate surface (36) of the member (12a). A coating blade (20a) is disposed adjacent to the backing member (12a) such that the blade (20a) urges the web (Wa) towards the perforate surface (36). A permeable belt (40) extends around the backing member (12a) with the belt (40) being disposed between the web (Wa) and the backing member (12a) such that when the source of partial vacuum (38) is connected to the backing member (12a), air flows through the belt (40) and the perforate surface (36) for drawing the web (Wa) into close conformity with the belt (40). The belt (40) and the web (Wa) then move together in the same direction for inhibiting the buildup of deleterious material adjacent to the blade (20a) that would otherwise remain adjacent to the blade (20a) causing marking of the coating applied to the surface of the web (Wa) by the blade (20a).

Abstract: A sealing apparatus for sealing a movable blanket (18) which extends through an extended nip (16) defined by first and second cooperating press members (12, 14). Abstract: An air spring apparatus (10) has quick pressure release, and rapid air exhaust, capability by means of a relatively large diameter exhaust port (44) in a larger, primary air spring (12) which is controlled by the action of a smaller, secondary air spring (14). The secondary air spring (14) is equipped with a check valve (56) which controls the flow of air into the primary air spring (12). The rapid exhaust of the primary air spring (12) is effected by triggering the removal of air pressure from the secondary air spring (14) through a plurality of orifices (86) in a centrally disposed guide tube (52) which permits the collapse of the smaller air spring and the accompanying removal of a valve plate (48) from a relatively large diameter exhaust port (44) of the primary air spring (12). Once the exhaust port (44) in the primary air spring (12) has been opened, the air pressure in the primary air spring (12) is immediately lowered, and the load on the larger air spring causes rapid expulsion of the volume of air in the primary air spring (12) to permit its quick deflation and collapse to a predetermined minimum height.

Abstract: A dryer apparatus (10) is disclosed for drying a pressed web (W). The apparatus (10) includes a plurality of single tier dryer sections (12, 14) in which successive sections (12, 14) dry alternate sides (16, 18) of the web (W), the web (W) being transferred between successive sections (12, 14) without any open draw of the web (W) such that the web (W) is uniformly dried on both sides (16, 18) thereof while the web (W) is restrained against cross-machine directional shrinkage. The felt (30) is also disposed between the roll (28) and the web (W) with the felt (30) in direct contact with an alternate side (18) of the web (W). The intermediate roll (28) defines a plurality of circumferential grooves (32-37) for diffusing boundary air (38) following the felt (30) that would otherwise tend to lift the web (W) from the felt (30) extending around the roll (28). The arrangement is such that inherent machine directional shrinkage (MD) of the web (W) during drying thereof inhibits cross-machine directional shrinkage (CD) of the web (W) during movement of the web (W) between successive dryers (12, 14).
