In an electron multiplier of the resistive channel type and which may be incorporated in a channel type image intensifier tube, two channels 23, 25, each with a potential gradient along it set up by voltage sources 30, 32, are arranged in series but inclined with respect to one another, as shown, so that the effects of ion feedback from the output end to the input end of the multiplier are reduced. An image intensifier tube may have two, three or more multiplier channel arrays and one voltage source may be used for all arrays. The arrays are preferably separated from each other by a distance equal to the channel diameter in order to minimize moire pattern beating effects. The arrays may be at different potentials and the voltage between adjacent arrays may be reversed to interrupt operation.
